Importance of Authority

No authority leads to no structure in society.

The year was 1917. The Czar was just overthrown and sent into exile. The Bolsheviks formed together and with their glorious leader, Vladimir Lenin, took control of Russia with the promise of a halcyon government. Peasants were treated like tools to provide for the government. The people were maltreated and abused beyond belief. Right before all this trouble and turmoil started, the people were discontent with the form of government they were living under so they rebelled and many, eventually, fell to their graves. Authority is a structure for society to follow that allows society to run more efficiently and without authority and guidance, the world would be plunged into darkness.

Without any authority the world wouldn't have any structure to it. Not just the world, even a simple household would be in disarray if there was no authority.

“Go clean your room!!” Mrs. Smith said screaming while peeking into her son's room.

“No! Make me,” replied the bratty child. In this example, there isn't any progress in the lives of the mother and the child. Only the bond between the mother and the child is damaged in this conversation without any authority. The child feels bitter towards the mother for asking him to do work and the mother is bitter towards the child for his insubordination. The child questions his mother's authority and rebelled by not listening to her and there was no positive outcome, only bitter feelings surfaced.

“Son, can you please clean your room?”

“Yes, of course mother, right away.” Replied the child, politely.

“Thank you.” In this example, the child listened to the mother and responded in a polite manner which strengthened the bond between the mother and child and added order in the household. The child's room is clean and that's another thought that was lifted off the mother's shoulders. Authority being questioned leads to strife and much bitterness.

In the hallways of the great school of John P. Stevens, authority is the reason why all the students are construction lanes, why students aren't punching each other, why there isn't food all over the place and why the floors aren't littered with papers. There are rules everyone has to follow to keep the learning environment fresh, clean and orderly. Without these rules, the learning process of the students would be in jeopardy. The teachers and the principal are the authority that all the students follow. Even though there are some troublemakers, they are put down. “The nail that sticks out gets hammered.” This is an ancient Chinese proverb that delineates the order of society. Whenever there is someone that goes against the flow of a system and someone to draw back on the progress of mankind, they are put down to make them seem normal and society goes on.

The well-being of society is definitely not enhanced when many of its people question authority. Questioning authority leads to bitter feelings, confusion, and even death. Authority is the skeleton of society. Without it, no progress can be made. There is nothing set in stone to help give people structure in their lives. Would the ancient pyramids be built as beautifully as they were made without someone ordering the workers around and providing some design for the workers to follow?
