Inside the Mind of a Third World Cop

Third world countries are best described as developing countries. These countries mostly found in the continent of Africa lacks the basic amenities required to strengthen and protect its entire citizenry.

Most of these countries lack good roads, portable water, constant electricity supply and above all, security of lives and property is put in the hands of God instead of law enforcement agencies.

The citizens of such countries lack faith in their governments and every other agency being controlled by its government.

The individuals in government in such countries are most of the time out to enrich themselves and their immediate families, and whether its citizens live or die, they really do not care.

Now when you find yourself living in such countries, where the unemployment rate is high, and the basic amenities of life is lacking, and you do not have a means to migrate to God's own country, oh boy, for a season if not for all eternity you would be best described as “confused”.

But this is not the case, the people in these countries are extremely hopeful; they see their situation as temporal. Not all of them anyway.

Most of the citizens of these countries have given up on their country due to the harsh economic and social atmosphere.

It is under these harsh conditions that you find what is best described as the third world cop. These cops are always in the news, most of the time for the wrong reasons.

The third world cop does not join the force because he is passionate about the well being of his country, neither is he desirous about the upholding of law and order in his country, he is only in the force in order not to be on the list of the unemployed.

Prior to his entry into the force, he must have walked the length and breadth of his country in search of a job that does not exist, he must have experienced disappointments from family and friends leaving him depressed and hateful.

It is with this frustration that he goes to join the police force, not because he wants to serve and protect, but because he is tired of being among the list of unemployed people.

Bearing in mind that he now has some bit of power, especially when a gun has been handed over to him, he goes about looking for scores to settle.

The third world cops are best at transferring their many years of frustration on the defenseless citizens whom they are supposed to protect.

Third world cops are known to break the laws of their countries even more than hoodlums.

In my country Nigeria for example, these cops man what is popularly referred to as check points.

In these check points, you find policemen brandishing their weapons and extorting money commercial bus drivers.

As a commercial bus driver, you dare not challenge them. If you do, they will come up with trump up charges and lock you up in cells which has not experienced any form of hygiene since the days of slave trade.

Apart from checkpoints, the third world cop enjoys night patrol more than anything. During these so-called night patrols, they go about arresting citizens returning home from work and charge them for wandering.

Once charged with this offence, the only right you have is a right to call your family member from their pay phone center to come and rescue you with bail money.

Well, bail is free so says the government, but it is not the government that arrested your cousin or brother, he is in the hands of the third world cop.

Don't hope for your brother's freedom if you don't have bail money.

In Nigeria, most of the high profile assassinations have not been solved till date, this is because it is the third world cop that is called to solve these murders, how do one expect a human being lost in the world of extortion to solve crimes? It's impossible!

It is believed that it is the insensitivity of the government over the years that have led the present decay in the police force in third world countries.

In Nigeria for example, policemen receive the least amount of money as salaries and are daily challenged by criminals who possess far more sophisticated weapons.

They are also not well equipped. Their patrol vehicles can give you all kinds of skin diseases if you spent more than a minute in them.

The third world cops are serving a government that can only trusted to makes promises that are never kept. There is no form of motivation, nothing to ginger them up. The average third world cop is an angry man.

On a sad note, if a third world cop is killed in the line of fire there is absolutely no insurance that will guarantee the upkeep of his family.

So out of this frustration he transfers his anger to the masses that he is closer to since his master the government is seated in high places where his voice can never be heard.
