Issues in Sustainable Development

Sustainability in its environmental term refers to the possible stability of vital human ecological support systems, such as agriculture, industry, tourism, fishing, forestry and the planet's climatic system.

For a long period, humans viewed Earth as a place with a limitless supply of materials. It was not until in recent times that they have moved towards the realization that these natural resources were not going to be everlasting. In order for continual survival, strategies must be developed to preserve our natural resources and discover substitutes to utilize our land in the best promising way for our future and future generations.

As the issue of sustainability on a global format advances, climate change is a critical factor that also needs to be addressed. This is because the concern about climate change has reached breaking point. Polls taken from mid 2003 to early 2007 show almost a 50% increase in the levels of concern on climate change now stating that climate change is a “real threat” or a “major problem” (pg.80). Even though the majority of the population are still unfamiliar with the more in depth science of climate change, this does not take away from their fixation to tackle it.

A common theme in the research found by the Australian Research Group (ARG) is that most of the Australian's polled are looking for leadership in order to find solutions, fight and maintain climate change. A staggering 81% of those people asked, agreed that Australia should lead the world in finding a solution (pg.83). Bowman a voter of the Coalition learning stated that “If everyone sits back and waits for someone else to take the lead, nothing will get done… If no one else is going to step up and say let's change it, then maybe we need to.” In addition that same percentage of people viewed the government as the main persons that should be responsible for solving climate change and increasing current investments in renewable technology (pg. 84).

They felt this for the reason that the government is behind this change from the development of factories that are damaging our environment. On the other hand Ian McHarg and Paul Ehrlich stated that they viewed “human society and economy were largely regarded as a "cancer" spreading out of control.” It was also mentioned that human activity such as the "destruction of biodiversity" needed to be shortened in order to help the environmental movement and take control of pollution with as little control by humans as possible.
