Price of Fame

Fame is a fickle thing. The desire for it leads one to step on other people, even family, just to acquire it.

I've always wondered what a person's intentions are whenever he/she does something peculiar. It's not that I distrust everybody; it's just the way I was raised. I was brought up to be cautious and that's exactly what I have become. It pays to be a bit more careful because it is an irrefutable fact that a person does not commit an act of his own volition without having any intention or reason behind it. And we all know that not all intentions are noble. That's why I am wary. With that said, let us now proceed to the main point of this article.

For starters, let me just say that it's not in my nature to diss people. But in light of recent events, I find myself needing to let out all of my pent-up opinions. What better medium to do that than through writing, right? Well anyway, back to the topic at hand. I harbor no ill feelings towards the person that I'm referring to here. It's just that his actions sparked the interest of the cynic in me. The timing of it all just hit a nerve…my skeptic nerve, that is.

The guy I'm talking about is an actor; a very famous celebrity during the 1980's. That was the year his career skyrocketed, I think. I was still a kid that time but I do remember that his team-up with a certain female celebrity, whose dad was a political figure, was a famous one and it led to them getting married. They had a daughter but parted ways because of another woman, or so I'm told by our housekeeper. She was an avid fan of them both and followed their love story relentlessly.

After a series of unfortunate events, he moved to America and started his life anew there. He said during an interview that in all the years he was living there, he still got movie offers but decided to let it all go. Been there, done that so it's time to move on and all that…. So, this got me asking. Why come back all of a sudden? It was such a surprise; there has been no warning of his plan to make a comeback in show business.

I can't help but think that this guy is really clever. Why, you ask? Hmm, it's probably because his daughter just entered into showbiz herself. The public positively adores her; they've been pining for her to enter the world her parents were a part of ever since she was a kid. They watched her grow into a beautiful young lady and admired her talents. And now that she finally entered into showbiz, she is an instant success. It was clear that she got special treatment. I didn't see anything wrong with that, she's got a nice personality. I only protest if it was someone not worthy of such public adulation.

So, all eyes were on the daughter, her every move was avidly captured by cameramen and news crews. She was the subject in all the news reports, her rise to fame followed by the masses. Then out of nowhere her dad shows up, announcing to the nation that he will be making a comeback. Whoa, something's not quite right. Why now? Didn't he say that he got movie offers while he was still in America and he turned them down? What was that?

Suddenly, he's the one that people are now talking about. He's the one in every news reports, making appearances in all the right shows, giving out interviews, etc. Hah, stealing the limelight from his daughter! How low is that? Even though he just got back, he's now involved in a controversy. You know what guys? He's really smart. The only way to get attention is to create a sensational move. He's playing with both giant networks in the entertainment industry and it looks like he's going to get away with it.

Contrary to what he wants the public to believe, he is not a good father nor will he ever be no matter how hard he tries. If he was, he would've just supported his daughter and gave way for it is, after all, her time to shine. He would have made more of an effort to be there as she was growing up, not to mention do that with his other daughters with different women as well. Promiscuous, wasn't he? Fact is he was an absentee dad. His daughters are just kindhearted enough to actually forgive his shortcomings.

He's had his stint at stardom; he chose to give that up long ago (or so he says). Now, he's making a comeback and stole all the public's attention. I guess that's what he wanted all along, coming back with a bang. He's just looking for the right time. Oh, he found it all right. But it's at the expense of his daughter.
