Six Attributes We Can All Learn From the Military

Highlighting six military attributes the larger society can emulate by looking at military behavior.

The Military comprises the armed forces of a nation, the Army (Land), The Navy (Sea), and the Air-force (Air). The main three arms work together to protect the territorial integrity of a nation.

The Military establishment is known for a lot of qualities which if imbibed by the larger populace could help in achieving our goals. In fact, some nations like Israel, Iraq, and Egypt make military service compulsory for everyone at a particular age.

Some of the attributes entrenched in the military are outlined below:

  1. Unity

The first thing that will likely attract anybody to any arm of the military is it's uniformity in every aspect. The military is uniform in appearance and in purpose.

One needs to see a military parade to appreciate the unity of its officers .They march smartly and singly giving an impression of a single organism with several legs.

Apart from that, there is what is called E'spirit de Corps among the armed forces .This solidarity among military men is taken for granted .They are usually there for one another.

  2. Discipline

The military have rules and regulations governing the conduct of their officers. For optimum performance of duties, these laws must be obeyed. Any officer who disobeys is punished according to the rules. Orders must be obeyed. Disrespect of a senior officer is not condoned.

When any task is to be done, it must be done one hundred percent efficiently. There is no lowering of standards.

While there are some people who maintain a life of discipline, there are some who behave anyhow. Such people need to take a cue from the military's spartan discipline.

  3. Focus

When a military man is given a particular office or task, he tackles it with singleness of purpose. Any deviation or delay is an unpardonable sin. The military have no patience with malingering. They are trained to have both physical and mental strength to overcome all obstacles.

  4. Versatility

There is no field of endeavor in the world that we don't have the military operating in. There are military doctors, engineers, scientists, psychologists and many more.

In fact several advancements in technology have come from the military. The fast jets in use today, the mobile phones and the internet are only few examples of devices originally devised for military use but have now been modified for civilians all over the world.

  5. Sacrifice

In times of war or crisis, military men are deployed to contain the situation. These men and women risk their lives facing danger so that the general populace can be secure .A lot of them get killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.

Though, some may argue that they are paid to fight, it is important to note that they could have chosen other professions, if only to save their lives.

We praise a doctor for saving lives and a farmer for providing food to sustain life. But none of this people do this by losing their lives. This is why we need to appreciate the military more because they pay the ultimate price so that we can live without the fear of external aggression.

  6. Leadership

It is natural to see average military man exhibit leadership qualities. Military men are usually astute leaders. They are trained to be responsive not only to their duties but also the needs of the populace.

It is true that the military has produced despotic leaders, dictators who caused their nations terrible grief. But it also true that some retired military men, who have embraced democracy, have also produced firm and quality leadership which has moved their nation forward.

In conclusion, it is important to note that while no organizational system is totally perfect, the military over the centuries have strived to maintain high level of professional excellence, a level we can all emulate.
