Social and Cultural Change

A short piece on socialism.

One major social experiment was socialism. Socialism is a philosophy about the even distribution of wealth throughout the society. Socialism plus dictatorship equals communism. Socialism takes away the incentives of working hard. In small, willing communities on cheap land, the socialists promoted their mission.

Religions movements included Mormonism, or the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints. There were also the Shakers, founded by Mother Ann Lee- sort of like an religious group of Quakers. They did not marry nor have children. Another group was the Oneida Community in central NY State. They practiced a form of Christian socialism. A movement in America was Transcendentalism, which emphasized the relationship between humans and nature, as well as conscience.
