A number of factors caused people to immigrate to Canada. The common denominator though is to seek greener pastures. They believe Canada can offer them the kind of life that their respective countries could not. Some are forced by circumstances to flee their country, others by own volition. Whatever circumstances surrounding their immigration,
it is safe to assume that they all look to Canada as their source of hope for a better future.
Cause and Effect
Some immigrants are fortunate enough to be able to realize their dreams in Canada. Others attain minimal success but some are able to stand out from the rest. A lot of success stories are found in immigrants who venture into business.
The successful immigrants attributed their success to hard work. The determining factor though is determination. The first few years settling down in Canada are the hardest. Acclimatizing to a new place, new faces, new culture and new job is no mean feat. Added to that is the necessity to learn new skills and even language.
It is not unusual for these immigrants to be faced with a number of newcomer woes. For one, most of those who are able to immigrate to Canada are licensed professionals in their respective countries. When they arrived in Canada though, it would not be surprising to know that they would face struggles in using their acquired knowledge and skills due to licensing barriers.
Ed Tapia, one of the successful immigrants who hailed from the Philippines, advised that "While you're doing the "taxi" work, be sure you're also sending resumes to engineering firms. Keep on going, keep on applying." One could not just simply lose hope.
Tapia, being a mentor of the Multicultural Helping House Society, also recommends that new immigrants should “join organizations, make themselves visible in the community and attend lots of networking sessions.”
The first few years as immigrants in Canada can be degrading as one is forced to accept jobs that are normally below their capabilities in order to survive. The road to successful immigration is filled with struggles. Canada offers a lot of opportunities but it is not for the taking, it is to be earned. In the end, success comes to those who work hard and continues to struggle despite adversities. Determination is the key.
