The Top Five Time Wasters of Today's Society

A day has 24 hours. How much of the time do you use efficiently? Fact is, the more dominant part of the day is used for time-wasting activities. Here are the top five of an average person at the current time.

  1. Television

Most of the people, when they arrive at their houses after a long day at work or school, jump onto their couch with a beer or a bag of chips, and turn on their TV.

A stunning three to five hours are averagely spent watching the television, staring into an illusionary world where virtual-ity seldom meets reality, apart from the news.
  2. Computer

One to four hours is spent, on an average, by sitting on a chair with an arched back in front of the computer. Surfing the net, chatting with friends you know and “friends” you have never seen and most probably will never see in your life, and of course, playing games. This is also a place where an illusionary world is created. A very famous example would be the game “ Second Life”, where a virtual, literally second life, takes place.
  3. Video Games

This is another ultimate time waster, mostly for the younger, male generation. It seems as if being in a virtual world appeals to the people. Sitting or laying in a dark room, with the flashing television screen and a swiftly moving controller for hours a day, even at night if you beat records or advance to levels you had never achieved before.
  4. Sleeping

Wouldn't you just love to jump into that bed and start going into your little world of dreams? Ok, your bed is probably more comfortable than this one, but still. So much time is spent sleeping, that a bit part of the day is lost. Granted, you do need seven to eight hours of sleep, on an average, but sleeping for 10 to 12 hours is an evident waste. You already lose 10 hours of the day, meaning you only have 14 hours left. This time waster is definitely one of the healthier ones, but still. All you do is lie there, dream, possibly even do exercise due to a dream where you are the best bike rider in the world, and you wake up with your covers on the ground and your feet in a very awkward position.
  5. Telephone

I bet only a handful of people remember this phone. It already took minutes to type in a phone number. Then you'd get it wrong, and redo it. When you eventually get through to the person you want to talk to, you hear a “beep beep beep beep”, stating the fact that the line is busy. If you are lucky enough to reach the other person, you start with the usual really boring small-talk conversations. Later you reach a point where you notice that the conversation is slacking off, so you start getting philosophical and try to dig deeper into the other persons way of living. When you finally get to put the phone back down to its resting place, you notice that your right (or left, for lefties) ear is totally sweaty and sticky, so you have to take a shower because of one telephone call. Summed up, the event just stated would have lasted (shower included) one to possibly one and a half hours.
