Unexpected Encounter

Hickey and a pediatrician's office.

About two weeks ago I had to take my 4-year-old son to see his pediatrician.

As in any other child-related establishment, the waiting area was well equipped to keep the kids busy. So, while my little one got pretty occupied exploring and making new friends, I decided to look around.

In somewhat a minute or so, I found myself staring at something rather shocking than pleasant. A young woman sitting next to me had a huge hickey on her neck! Feeling a bit embarrassed, I turned my eyes the other way, just to see a view even more picturesque. It seemed like some kind of a vampire sucked on poor thing's flesh leaving three distinctive marks behind! Uncomfortable about my little observations, I tried to concentrate my attention on the "Drake and Josh" series while keeping an eye on my little rascal. Still, despite my hardest attempts, I would catch myself involuntarily staring at the ill-fated hickeys.

Now, I'm not trying to be judgmental. Everybody has a right to lead their private life the way they want. And what I think is trashy, some people do consider to be hot. But even if you think it's hot, does it mean it is appropriate to show off your "love bites" in a place full of little children?

Just to think about it, we do have a law against indecent exposure. We have a law prohibiting women topless sunbaths and wearing thongs in public beaches and swimming pools. We care about our children not seeing too much of a naked adult body. Than why is it okayed to flash the traces of sucking on your neck? Would you feel comfortable with noticing something like that on your child's teacher or caregiver? Than why should my child and I enjoy the sight of your hickey while waiting for the doctor?

People say sometimes it is polite and tactful to say nothing instead of hurting someone else’s feelings. But it is also a matter of tact to cover up your hickey before going out to certain places.
