What Lies Ahead

(contd.)

The result is unemployment. But one may be ready to question that employment of other is dependent on his/her capability to which I will come later. The fact highlighted in both the examples above is not to depict what is right or wrong as they are beyond definition. But the basic fact that life gives many opportunities to understand ones true potential and what one is doing to self when he stampedes those options. They struggle for the entire life in a complexity, which they themselves cannot break when the time has flown. The need of the hour is to identify what one can do the best way and let the imaginations fly.

Role of education in making us stereotype

Having discussed the problems faced by the generation today it is imperative to consider the role of education in this process of making clones. Some of the factors which gives rise to such disability are:

  • Outdated syllabus, which is continuing from the time of independence. How can one keep a student interested and motivated in technology if world is fabricating hybrid fuel vehicles and students are still taught diesel and petrol engines theory which are embossed in their minds from school.
  • Lopsided approach to subjects- undermining of subjects like arts, sports, geography etc. and favoring only mathematics, science and computers as if they have the capacity to make them into Ramanujam, Einstein and Charles Babbage respectively. They don't understand that these became what they are because they knew what they can do best. How would have Einstein done if he was forced into painting, could we have got the theory of relativity. Maybe yes, but as a reflection in art.
  • Conventional teaching methods- the system still imparts the knowledge in the same manner. People mug up their syllabus and spit on answer sheets to get something as useless as marks as a measure of one's intelligence. I call them great parrots, mere copycats and not worth a dime in this world.
  • Inability to identify a child's true talent in the beginning- children show the traits of their talent when they are just out in this world and keep on displaying to the time it is pursued or killed by this society and education system.
  • Quality of making “children think”- one can imagine what will happen if one is asked to answer questions in the way they have been dictated by teacher. One is not allowed to think. The questions which one prepares and try to solve in Data interpretation and Logical reasoning when preparing for CAT like entrances can be given to students as early as 8-9th class to invoke thinking. The thinking process when developed does wonders beyond one's imagination.
  • Schools are for profit- the people who made schools with the objective of making money can never imbibe any values whatsoever in young saplings. They are too involved with their bank statements and how can they make it fatter. Schools need continuous updating; the world changes around and so should the education.
  • Perspective and Counseling- children are in a state of turmoil when they are unable to do things they wanted to do just because they don't get the perspective from people around them nor do they get counseling from experienced people who can help in shaping a child into a responsible and happy human being. A right piece of guidance by counseling can bring about a significant change in one's life.

It is not that the reformists don't understand these problems but little is done in this regard. There are schools coming up which do take care of the points mentioned above. But the problem is that they are very few in number and also they are heavy on common man's pocket. The need of the hour is to identify the loopholes in this education system and to adopt a system, which takes care of the grooming of a child as a whole, and motivating him to take up career ladders of their interest and supporting them all along the way. It should not be like, the child is asked to walk on the path wherein he gets no support or motivation and guidance from experienced people. There is no harm if education systems of other countries are studied and analyzed adopting the best of all worlds. With the huge human resource which India possesses it would not be long when a quality education system will make the world praise India for it's diversity in real sense and the ability to compete with the best in all walks of life.

Imagine India striking gold in sports like swimming, cycling, high jumps, Wimbledon, karate, F1 racing together with paintings of Indian artists amongst Picasso, Da Vinci and Indian citizens getting Nobel prizes for their work in diverse fields. I would certainly like to live that dream.

Hoping this article never relates to any youngster as this would mean that I am wrong and people are living up their dreams. Am ready to be wrong if this persists. I hope I have left some of you wondering and questioning yourselves, which believe me is the first step to identify yourself in this pursuit of happiness.
