Effective Communication

How effectively do you communicate? This is a no-nonsense approach to reveal the basics of communication and how to do it effectively.

So you have read all there is to read on communication. Do you know where to start? Do you know what message people get when they see you, speak with you, or read your communications?

What is the Objective of Communication?

According to various definitions, the objective of communication is to send a message. It is what the communicator wants the receiver to remember the most. It is what the communicator wishes the receiver to take as meaningful information. For this reason, effective communication must start with a message.

How Can We Communicate Effectively?

Written, spoken, or formed from body language, communication involves a sender, the message, and a receiver. People are constantly communicating from the moment they awake. To affect any means of communication properly, we must mind our audience-find out what they respond to, what their needs and desires are. Determining key points about your target audience will make it easier for you to tailor your message. A tailored message means you put thought into what you are communicating.

What About Written Communication Specifically?

Use the language that relates to your audience. Avoid complicated words if your target is a much younger generation. Avoid using words that are non-specific, in order to avoid seeming unknowledgeable about your subject. Shorter sentences-or even one short sentence that sums it all up-will create a more dramatic effect.

What About Verbal Communication Specifically?

Speak to your audience in the same manner you would write to them. Make your message tailored for your target. Keep in mind the speed and tone with which you deliver the message. As well, be audible without offending your listeners.

What About Non-Verbal Communication Specifically?

Keep hand gestures to a minimum-use them to emphasize a few points throughout your entire presentation. Whether you are communicating in an interview or a face-to-face meeting with upper management, always maintain eye contact for sincerity. Relax your eyebrows without appearing disinterested. When sitting, take a stand and move around without affecting a nervous pace.

People are constantly in communication with one another. It is up to you to stand out as an effective communicator.
