I believe that tourism is somewhat the continuation of gentrification, that is because when a neighborhood is gentrify, it becomes more attractive and opens the door for tourism.
Tourism develops and brightens the value of life by numerous factors. It increases taxation for development and enhancement of local services and the community infrastructure; it attracts more people and businesses which creates more jobs and increase the economy.
Tourism is a service industry that has various variables such as hospitality, transportation and accommodation. It is a way for people to somehow fulfill their desires and at the same time experience something out of their own surroundings. Fainstein and Gladstone (1999, 21) revealed that “tourism function as a vehicle for fantasy and persona growth”. It enhances people’s perception of the world and educate them about different cultures.
As cited before, tourism’s function has different purposes. As for many countries, its main function is economic. Judd affirmed “the promotion of culture and tourism quickly became a principle component of the new economic development strategy” (1999, 35). revenue produced by the industry, taxation are being impose on local businesses, and many environments become gentrify, and the opportunity for increases jobs such like Jobs are readily and easily created, and economic progression. Furthermore, because countries are so dependent on tourism, government officials on numerous occasions select a specific region as a tourist destination and gentrify and beautify it.
In my opinion, I think when a country depends solely on tourism for economic, they only people of wins is the visitors. The profit that is make is put in into further support and development of the tourism industry. The areas that the city spends so much money to gentrify become a place only for visitors. So the country’s own citizen can not enjoy it. According to Judd (1999) tourists are kept in a bubble that is tourist are only kept in the area that is gentrified and beautify. They are being isolated from the rest of the country and its citizens. Judd (1999, 36) mentioned a well-defined perimeter separates the tourist space from the rest of the city”. The city wanted to keep away crime, poverty and deteoriating areas away from the tourist’s eyes. As tourist, when we go away, we only go to places that we feel safe. So it s vital that tourist feel comfortable and safe on their vacation, thus many cities create the bubble to ensure tourists get want to they want. Judd (1999, 39) disclosed that “the tourist bubble is like a theme park, in that it provides entertainment and excitement”. The bubble provides everything that tourist is looking forward to, that is a worry free environment. There are casinos that are established, various indoors and outdoors agendas (sports facilities), malls and shopping centers, and art galleries.
Gentrification and tourism both are economically driven. Gentrification is economic because it is done for investment and mainly because the place is devalued. New comers are highly motivated because the can afford it, and they can make profit from it. Gentrification made be an economic factor but it also cause different issues such as culture, urban development, and politics. Because the buyer is not from that area that is being gentrified, they do not care what happen to the people that used to live there and the culture that they share, however, when they start to move in, began to bring with them their own idea and vision of what a neighborhood should look it. They impose their culture and their political ideas.
Tourism for me is a continuation of gentrification in a way that when the area becomes gentrified it becomes an attraction in its self. The area is no longer deteriorating, new middle class people are migrating into the areas and poverty with this community is no longer, so the crime rate decreases.
Gentrification is the essential idea of investing and development. For this process to happen there has to be a will in the city for things to improve and the gentrification process will take root. Once it has a hold on the city, things will happen on their own and continue that way like a person getting used to self improvement. It is like a person introduced to a beauty parlor and then after a while it becomes a regular part of routine to attend the parlor and have work done. All in all, it is small things that develop areas and bring police presence as well as have more investors and developers in the community that help the overall gentrification process.
Tourism is one of the lifelines of any city because the revenue from a tourism industry helps the overall capacity for improvement and the betterment of the city. Gentrification and tourism are two
