The study adopted the descriptive-correlational design. Descriptive design focused on describing the labor union profile, perception of workers towards level of labor union effectiveness and their quality of worklife. Correlation research design used to determine the relationship between the level of labor union effectiveness ,and quality of worklife of the banana plantation workers.
Sources of Data
Primary data were gathered using a survey questionnaire formulated to elicit responses from the workers in order to answer the questions raised in the study. Personal interviews were also conducted to ascertain the accuracy of the data to be presented. Secondary data were also used to establish profile of the labor unions.
Data Gathering Instrument
The instrument used in this research is a survey questionnaire. The first part elicits information on the level of labor union effectiveness in terms of provision of benefits, collective bargaining, dispute settlement and education of members measured on a scale of 1-5 where ,5 is very highly effective ;4 is highly effective ;3 is effective; 2 is fairly effective ;and 1 is ineffective .
The second part contains the statements on the quality of worklife where, interpersonal relation was assessed using the scale where, 5 is very good ; 4 is good ; 3 is fair ; 2- poor ;1- very poor . For satisfaction, 5 is very highly satisfied ; 4 is highly satisfied ; 3 is satisfied; 2 is fairly satisfied ; and 1 is not satisfied . For motivation, 5 is very highly motivated ; 4 is highly motivated ;3 is motivated; 2 is fairly motivated ;and 1 is not motivated .For commitment ,5 is very highly committed ; 4 is highly committed ; 3 is committed ; 2 is fairly Committed ; and 1 is not committed.
Sampling Procedure
The researcher adopted purposive sampling where in the researcher selected (3) three labor unions operating in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur. The researcher gathered the workers in the (3) three banana plantations where unions operate to answer the questionnaire. There are 30 respondents selected to answer the questionnaire per plantation. The total number of respondents is 90.
Procedure of the Study
First, the problem was identified and the specific questions were drawn. When the specific questions were determined and the variables identified, the framework was conceptualized to show the relationship of the variables. Then, a survey questionnaire was formulated which contained specific items to elicit the data or information needed to answer the specific questions asked in the study. The questionnaire which was part of the study was submitted October 17 ,2006 to the thesis committee for comments and suggestions for improvement.
After the questionnaire was finalized through the committee suggestions and after it was validated by the members of the committee .The researcher asked permission to the union officials for the conduct the study and the administering of the questionnaires on the banana workers.
When permission was granted, the questionnaires were distributed to the respondents .When these were retrieved, the responses were tabulated and analyzed.
Statistical Treatment
The data collected were analyzed and interpreted employing appropriate statistical tools as follows:
1. Frequency and percentage distribution for the description of the three labor unions, and the variables of the study.
The formula for percentage:
P=F/N x 100
Where:
P = percentage
F = frequency
N = total number of respondents
2. The Pearson Product - Moment Correlation Coefficient or Pearson r was used to determine the relationship between the independent variables.
The b Pearson r is represented by the following formula:
[N x2 - (x)2] - N y2 - (y)2]
r =
Nxy - xy
Where:
N = sample size
y = dependent variables
x = independent variables
3. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test if there are significant differences on the quality of worklife of the workers in the three banana plantations in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur.
