The World is High School

People are still segregated and separated into "cliques" whether we want to believe it or not.

The real world is a giant high school. We live in our little cliques, we ignore the rumors we hear throughout the world, but in the end we all find a way to work together. In David Brooks' writing “People Like Us,” he states that “all around the country is people making strenuous effort to group themselves with people who are basically like themselves” (269). In a way I agree with this statement, throughout our lives we have friends of either similar interests or cultures. Its sad, but the honest truth of life.

The truth is people are capable of living together in this world like high school. We can work together for community projects, to work, and help each other with responsibilities, but when we leave those environments we resume to our clique of our so called friends.

The friends that share similar interests, culture, or habits are the ones we feel most comfortable with. Brooks says, “human beings are capable of drawing amazingly subtle social distinctions and then shaping their lives around them” (269). I really took time to think about this and he's right. No matter how different we think we are from our friends, we have a similar interest, habit or culture holding us all together. My friends in class share the same culture as me, while my friends outside of class share the same interests. No matter how hard we try to make ourselves feel like we are diverse, we aren't.

Yes we might have Black, White, Latino, Indian and Asian friends, but in the end we may not share the same culture, religion or ethnicity, but we all share an interest. Whether it is basketball, reading, or even shopping, we share an idea that keeps us together. These ideas are what's keeping our world diverse and what's causing our world to be a giant high school.
