The main point here is that everyone is an underachiever according to the high standards set by society. The only people nowadays who are not are the rich and famous. It is not only in school we underachieve, but in every aspect of life as well.
Anyone can be an underachiever, especially those who aren't born with movie star good looks. Society seems to frown on you if you are not a walking stick wearing too tight clothing and wearing the latest fashions. Life shouldn't be like that and once wasn't, but as the years have gone by, the expectations of society have risen so much that hardly anyone can meet society's view of the achiever.
Grades also effect society's outlook on a person. People all the time get the idea that a person is slow minded or just plain dumb if they don't get good grades or if they drop out of school, but this simply isn't true! Some people just have more difficult lives than others and can barely keep up with the constantly accumulating pile of work that is given out each day.
Society sees not being employed as an under-achievement also. This is false as well. People drop out of school all the time because of medical problems and can hardly survive each day, much less running around for hours trying to make a minimum wage each month.
None of us are perfect, yet the standards of society have labeled us all underachievers unless we are on television or famous for something that will be soon forgotten. It shouldn't be like this, but the sad truth is that it won't change anytime soon .Even though society's high expectations have caused teens and adults to turn to suicide and anorexia, the expectations just keep growing. Maybe someday, they'll drop just a notch and we can all relax a little easier, but for now... all we can do is leave each day the best we can.
