Us Outsiders Have Not a Clue

A few people that are seen in society and judged simple because of who you think they are. Yet, these are our grandmothers, our cousins, and our friends.

One of the people I was once puzzled about, you know, the overweight girl with the weird colored hair, the one who wears the glasses that are always down too low-that girl who always seems to wish she had a friend, while she stares at her laptop, easily distracted by any passerby. She's always wearing the strangest shoes, the ones that make me wonder who even sells those things.

That's Sandy, the big girl with an even bigger heart. The Sandy that helped me when I needed help most, when no one was outside but the two of us. Sandy with the beautiful voice and the glowing smile, who likes her Caramel Macchiato the same way I like mine, extra sweet with lots of caramel. I know Sandy from a class at school, and she has a beautiful heart, I tell you.

Another person that some may be puzzled about is the strange little old lady who is always walking around while some laugh at her, but others just pass by her and not speak, wondering why she's not in a nursing home, for she doesn't seem as if she's equipped to be roaming the world alone. The lady with the all-white hair wearing plaid skirts and huge black shoes and flowered shirts that look as if they were pulled from the closet by a blind eye.

That's my granny. Yep, you heard me, that's my grandmother. My grandmother who finds pleasure in watching the world go "round and refuses to sit on her couch and wait for death to come tapping on her door. My grandma who has many of her clothes from years ago, when she paid $65 for a fancy plaid skirt that she"s fortunate enough to still be able to fit. My granny, who refuses to dye her hair because she accepts the fact that she's not some young teeny-bopper. And the shoes, yeah, you too may need some if you live to the old age of eighty-five like my blessed, old granny.

And what about the man who walks down the street swinging at the air, as if he's losing his mind. Is that a urine stain on his pants? And why isn't he incarcerated, I mean, you're probably afraid to stop at a red light while he's in walking proximity. Then, why does it seem like he's looking out of one eye?

Take a closer look at Thomas, Thomas who was a twenty-year-old, normal college student until he tried to join a fraternity, hospitalizing him for seven months, the effects causing him to lose sight in his right eye. Thomas who is on medication to keep him at the lowest level of sanity. Thomas whom we all know would never kill a mosquito because he feels like all of God's creatures who aren't trying to kill people deserve the chance to live. Thomas who doesn't realize that he's thirty-five sometimes, who likes to go outside, take walks, and have fun.

And who is the guy in the tailor-made suit? Yeah, the one with the briefcase, the iPhone, two laptops open at one time, who's working on one while he talks on a Bluetooth headset. The one who nearly toppled over poor old you as you struggled with your bags, barely able to afford a plane ticket, while he toys with gadgets that are more costly than a month of your rent. He is obviously a cruel, heartless prick who makes in a month what you probably make in a year.

But hey, he's not so bad… That's William, and he is headed to his hometown to see his baby sister graduate from high school, missing a meeting at work that he told was mandatory, caring not if his job is in jeopardy because he wouldn't miss his little sister's graduation for the world. William also has an autistic son, and donates a large percentage of his earnings to charity every year.

Before you judge someone, look down on someone, or make assumptions based on how someone looks, think again. This is somebody's mother, somebody's brother, somebody's friend.
