Jesus goes on in verse 11 to give more insight, explaining what he has already said more and focusing in on His point in verse 12b.
“. . . . how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?”
Why is the Holy Spirit given to us? John 16:13 states:
“How be it when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
From the above we can gather that The Holy Spirit is given to guide us into all truth, and in this case the truth of prayer is of asking (asking seeking knocking) or in other words praying.
We can begin our prayer life, asking for what God, our heavenly Father desires to give us first, So let's do that now, ok?
(Pray this out loud)
Now as you breathe in and out, the breath is the Holy Spirit and you are praying as you breathe. I can hear you think ?But I don't understand” -- EXACTLY! Just as a baby doesn't understand the very life of being. so you don't but guess what?
Just as a baby learns very quickly, so you, as a spiritual baby in Christ learn, and before you know it you will be laughing, and singing, and speaking and moving and crawling and walking and running ? all to the Glory of God your heavenly Father!
So for now, breathe, and open your mouth wide to receive the nourishment of heavenly manna, and allow your newness to clean your soul and body up! (A reminder: you are a spiritual new creature now, and language is a part of this newness - the spiritual language of God - so beginning with ABBA, begin to listen with your heart and speak with your mouth the new language of love that God is bestowing upon you via His Precious Holy Spirit)
Without even knowing why or understanding, a baby is thankful for love, for arms to hold it, voices that soothe and speak to it, for milk and water to feed it, and amazingly likes the gentle bathing in clean warm water.
Likewise the Holy Spirit loves you and holds you and speaks to you and gives you the milk and water of the word of God to feed you; and even cleanses you with the water of the Word! So thank God breathe in, thank God breathe out!
Learning and Growing
Prayer: O God, please make clear to me what I need as I read this chapter. You know exactly what it is I need to learn, and You know how, so I place my soul, mind, will an emotions, in your hands and ask you to teach me, In Jesus Name, Amen!
In Luke 11:1 Jesus is asked by His disciples to teach them to pray. And this is still true today. It is not method or mentality. No, it is Jesus who teaches us to pray now, this day. Many people have done studies and can tell you about "how to" according to what they have studied. I do not want to share with you what I studied specifically.
I would rather share Jesus with you, and have your learn from Him, even in and through what I have studied. So it is with this chapter, as John says I must decrease so that Jesus may increase. I am not trying to be holy or sound holy.
Nope, it is something that is required to keep all things in divine order. And all who would follow Jesus, must pick up their cross and follow Him. Especially in sharing with others. The balance beam of our new life must always be the cross of Jesus Christ.
How is it, you may ask, that Jesus will teach? Good question. Revelation is the answer, not goose bumps or shivers, necessarily, but affirmations by the Holy Spirit, sent to us by Jesus. For it is as He leads and guides that we grow and learn, into all truth, anyway.
So, in sharing or teaching, we all rely on God, the Holy Spirit to reveal to each one individually and specifically what is necessary to learn. This is an awesome way to instruct and most awesome way to learn. Yet it is required and incomparable in the unity of faith that is grown in us all as we follow in God's way.
At this point, it is important to read the scripture in Luke 11:2.
“And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.”
