A Hipster Rants

A rebuttal to those who hate the Hipster movement.

It is easy to bash this so called "hipster" movement. This is because all of us are hipsters. No one wants a part of the unthinking, ignorant masses. Everyone wants to be unique and stand for something. Unfortunately for the few of us that do care about the poor, destitute, hungry, and sick it has become a movement. Just like with all the cultural movements of the past commercialism and corporations have bought and sold this as well. However rather than completely disown and disenfranchise this as awful and the destruction of culture, let us hail it for bringing some enlightenment if only shallow.

For it is this movement that has moved corporations to stop using child labor, to donate to Africa and the homeless. We have changed capitalism into activism. We became interested in supported causes and in saving the earth, and... and we MADE the same corporations who where just years ago employing slave labor and polluting the earth now the champions of the movements. We have realized the power of consumerism and have used it to our advantage. That being said we have to recognize the cons of this movement as well. Because activism is so popular we have "posers" those who have joined the causes because it is cool or hip. It is THESE people that give hipsterdom a bad name.

Those that do not know what it stands for or what it means. Finally we need to realize that this has all happened before. With every cultural and counter-cultural movement comes the watering down of it. It happened with rock, punk, and rap. All culture, even counter-culture can and will be bought as we live in such a capitalistic society and until we cease to be consumers cultural revolutions will always grow and fade, be bought and sold, and eventually die. It is how we function.

WE ARE CONSUMERS! But we can use that to our advantage. So I challenge you, those who bash this movement to sit back see what good it actually can accomplish. Realize that there are pros and cons to all movements accept that and accept "hipsterdom".

Thank you, it is about time someone address the benefits of this Hipster culture. We need to realize our accountability for others!

Movement? I\'m sorry, but a fashion is not a movement. I don\'t think real active people who donate their time and effort to make a change in the world would enjoy being grouped with you and the people who enjoy labeling themselves \'hipsters\'. Get out and do something instead of relying on your so called collective consumer power. There\'s always something you can do to change the world.
