The Daily Life of Romans

The daily procedures in ancient Rome.

The Roman family

The family came from the word familia in Latin. In Rome the father was head of the family and was given complete permission from the Roman law. The women had to do what the father or husband said to do. Women had respect also in the society because if there were no women there would not be such certain festivals.

Roman House

Roman houses usually had one or two rooms with an atrium in the middle of house. The atrium is a shallow pool filled with rain water. Most Roman house didn't have kitchens or bathes so they went to there local baths and cooking stations. Some apartments were overcrowded with people and were usually five stores high.

Schooling

In early Rome children were educated by there parents and later on Greek slaves and freed men set up the first schools. These schools usually had about twelve students. Not everyone went to these schools because you had to pay the teachers fee. Most children dropped out when they were twelve years old because only very rich parents could pay the fess to secondary schools.

Food and Eating

In many Roman buildings were made out of wood so it was illegal to cook in your apartments unless you have proper kitchens to cook in. Most Romans usually went to cook them in public ovens. Most Romans ate simple food and drank wine or water. Richer Romans who had proper kitchens got there slaves to cook and serve them. Romans usually ate to they had to vomit and some apartments had rooms especially for vomiting.

Roman fashion

Most Romans wore simple clothes made out of wool or linen. Richer Romans sometimes wore imported clothes made from wool. Both women and man wore loincloth and women also wore brassiere. The main piece of clothing was a tunic which was a two piece clothing stitched down from the sides with sleeves that reached the elbows, it was just worn below the knees and tied to the waist by a belt.

The daily bath

Romans were very health conscious. Romans built public bathes were both sexes could go and wash up. They built these baths because most roman houses didn't have baths so they went to the public baths. These baths were usually built by emperors. They were usually open to dusk.-by -Hussein amini
