Red Cloud was an Indian chief that was one of the most famous chiefs in Oglala Sioux history. He has nine children in his family, and his tribal name is Makhpiua-luta.
Red Cloud lived on a reservation called Pine Ridge reservation. He was born in 1822, near the Platte River. He was a member of the Snake family. No one knows his child name, so people call him Red Cloud. They call him that because of the way he covers the hillside with his warriors. He is the most powerful chief in his tribe.
The number one thing Red Cloud wants for his tribe is peace. He planned an ambush on Fetterman (from Fort Phil Kearny) December 21, 1866. He picked 10 people from the tribe to be decoys (one was 19-year-old Crazy Horse). Fetterman lead a troop of 80 men. When Fetterman saw the ten Indians that where coming, he attacked. Red Cloud led 2,000 more Indians to the area. He attacked Fetterman and killed him and all 80 men from his troop. He did all of that only to make more peace for his tribe.
Red Cloud banned Young-man-afraid-of-his-horses. He his a fine horseman, and he’s able to swim across the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers. He also has unquestionable courage. He only did what was best for the tribe.
The years before Red Cloud died he was blind, decrepit, and lived in a house built by the government. Finally, he died in Pine Ridge South Dakota, December 10, 1909.
