The White Wedding Gown

Symbolism of the white wedding gown and what it is today.

The White Wedding Gown was created to be a symbol of purity. The women were to wear the white wedding gown to show her purity at her wedding prior to getting married. The white wedding gown has taken on a completely new and different meaning today.

The white wedding gown is no longer a symbol of purity but a symbol of the woman's first wedding. After speaking to many women, 90% of the women I asked whether they would wait to consummate their nuptials until their wedding night replied: “No way. I want to make sure all of his body parts work”, “Need to make sure the man can satisfy me”, and “We both want to find out if we are sexually compatible”. Whatever happened to waiting for the right person?

You can almost compare their responses to buying a pair of shoes. They purchase a pair of shoes, try them and wear them. If the shoes get boring, are too tight, or out of style; they just go and replace them. Well what's the difference in what they are doing with men? They are doing the same thing. They are trying them out and if it doesn't work, they get replaced with someone else until they feel they have a perfect fit. Gross, I feel like I just borrowed shoes at a bowling alley where the shoes are sprayed with antiseptic spray and are so stretched out even the right size doesn't fit.

You would think knowing of all the various kinds of diseases and fatal options of trying things on for size; people would come to their senses. Love is supposed to be unconditional. When you marry someone - you become one. Marriage is not supposed to be on a trial basis only. Why bother wearing a white gown? Haven't you seen the color of the bowling shoes after a few wears? Why don't we make up a color of the gown according to the amount of tries or wears?

Sad but true. There is hope, though. Many of the kids in youth group at our church have taken vows of purity until marriage. A youth worker gave each girl who took this vow a silver bracelet as a reminder.
