Male or Female in America?

Is It Harder to Grow Up Male or Female in America?

The cool breeze was gently blowing my long hair across my face, as I slowly drifted in and out of consciousness. Then out of nowhere as if from a far off galaxy I can hear a muffled voice saying my name. It starts getting louder and louder and I finally come out of the deep sleep I was in to see my teachers face staring back at me asking why I didn't turn in my homework on time. This was just a normal class period for me when I was in high school. I could do pretty much nothing, goof off with my friends, wear whatever I wanted, never comb my hair, and I still looked good and people still liked me. In my opinion guys have a much easier life than girls. Me being a guy, I kind of surprised myself when I started thinking about whose life would be harder.

Growing up in a six person family with two sisters and one brother really made me think this topic through. The oldest of my siblings is 25 and while growing up she was never allowed to do anything or go anywhere during high school. My parents were very strict with her and when she took one toe over the line they would punish her strictly. My parents were the same way when my other sister got to the age where she wanted to hang out with boys and go have fun with her friends. I'm not really sure how they would have been with my brother because he was always a loner and hung out mostly with just me and my friends. When I got to the age when I started liking girls and wanted to start hanging out with my friends all the time, I was allowed to do whatever I wanted when I wanted. They would only ask where I was going and who I was going with. Eventually it just got to the point where I would tell them what I was doing and they trusted me completely. I guess I'm just trying to say how much easier I had it growing up in the house as compared to my sisters.

Enough with my family as an example though. Think back to high school and how every girl had to be perfect and have their hair done everyday and their makeup on just right. Then you look at guys who would roll out of bed still wearing the clothes they fell asleep in and jump in their vehicles and go to school. Both “the perfect girl” and the “slob guy” were considered equally popular. It just does not make sense that girls have to get so dressed up to impress guys and guys do absolutely nothing but still impress the girls. I was always the guy who would wake up with my hair going every which way and climb out of bed and go to school, and I had plenty of friend's girls and guys! I think back and look at all the girls though, if they wore something ugly one day they would never live it down or people would outcast them.

Boys are allowed to date whatever girl they want but girls have to have their parents approve of the boy first. Guys are very pushy and sometimes girls just give in to what the guys want and then the girl is considered a “hoe” or a “slut,” however the guy is considered to be “the man.” There are so many double standards in life for girls and guys it really is ridiculous. Girls are so bent out of shape about their weight that some actually stop eating, or they puke it all back up after eating it. Girls are under so much pressure from the media to be this perfect little princess who is the size of Cameron Diaz. When in all actuality a lot of girls look good just the way that they are. You could not pay me to grow up as a girl. The suicide rates among teenagers are staggering and they are 5:1 male to female. I would have guessed that more females committed suicide than males. However females out weighed the males in the attempted suicide column 3:1.
