What Harm High Heels Can Cause

Things high heels can do to a woman's body.

Women wear high heels on a daily basis whether it is to work, to college, or out on the town. High heels put an accent to a woman's legs by enhancing the shape. No doubt it helps the look of the outfit and body however, what is hardly thought about is the damage that these heels do to women's feet.

I wore heels when I went on a vacation. I thought the shoes would be fine since they were comfortable. Before I knew it, I found myself limping as I damaged my toe after a long day of walking in the heels. I found out I damaged a nerve in my toe on my left foot. It took me one year before it was completely healed. I swore I would never wear heels again unless it is for a very short time.

No doubt heels can cause a foot injury. Toes can easily be damaged since the body is not made to walk on toes. A woman can easily twist her ankle or fall completely by getting the edge of the heel wedged into a crack in the sidewalk or stuck into dirt. The Achilles tendon can be damaged as well. This tendon connects the heel to the calf muscle. With twisted ankles, pulled tendons, and damaged nerves it can make you wonder why women chance wearing such a shoe.

I have heard in other countries (particularly China and Japan) that women have had bones removed out of their feet in order to fit into smaller and narrower shoes. I am not sure if this is fact, but if this is something women are doing then they definitely need to stop. Damaging your feet for a certain look is not worth it. After all, you are the one who has to live with your choices and no one else has to suffer through the pain and agony you suffer from trying to look good.

Women can look good as long as they take care of themselves and are happy. Deciding which pump looks good is not going to make much difference to a man if you are beautiful anyway. It is very important to take of our bodies rather than destroy them for silly reasons such as trying to bring out more shape in your legs.

Another problem high heels cause is strained knees. Depending on how old the woman is, if she is walking in high heels all day it can definitely strain the knees and if the knees are already deteriorating then it is best to give up the heels all together. Back problems can begin by wearing heels all of the time. The lower back can begin to show signs of stress since the body is unbalanced by the demanding way a high heeled shoe makes a woman walk with the heel unnaturally higher than the toes.

Wearing high heels every now and then cannot be too harmful but it can cause slight stress to the lower back depending on the person and how often they wear them. If the woman is used to wearing high heels all of the time then chances are the knees are going to feel the strain in a few more years. My mother comes from an era where they had to wear heels with almost every outfit. Of course the heels weren't as high as what they have now but they were still not very easy to walk in on a daily basis. She has horrible feet due to wearing the heels all of the time. The amount of corns she has is horrendous, but she still has it set in her mind that if she doesn't wear the high heels she will not look good in her outfit. The high heels may look good on but the sad fact is the feet of a woman that wears these heels on a daily basis will show evidence of hard wear and tear to the body. I guess Billy Crystal was right when he used to say on Saturday Night Live “It's better to look good than to feel good.” If you are a woman that loves to wear heels then for the look then just be sure to kick them off during the day while at work or in class. Give your feet a break and pay attention to what your body is telling you.
