Eight Essential Career Habits

Career habits everyone should follow to improve their career and safeguard against being laid off.

Job security is a delicate but major issue nowadays with news of company layoffs here and there. Just because you seem to have no reason to worry with your current position, it is still best to be ready in case the same thing happens to you.

Learn how to safeguard yourself with these useful reminders.

Don't fear change

Learn to accept the inevitable. Should you be given the pink slip or happen to sense an omen, don't cower and start cursing the heavens. Pick yourself up and prepare for your next move.

Improve your skills

It may be that you are the best in what you do within your company, but still you could never predict what will happen. Somebody new comes along that is better than you or a process is invented that may result to your no longer being needed there. Improve your skills to the best that you can achieve so you can make yourself indispensable.

Learn new stuff

You must learn new skills to improve and get ahead of everybody. You can go back to school and study a new course or enroll in graduate studies, pick up a second career, attend seminars, training programs, and conferences, and of course read a lot. You will be surprised to see new doors of opportunities open up for you.

Network

See what your friends and colleagues are doing lately. Invite them to a drink or dinner. Keeping in touch with these people keeps you updated of the trends in the industry you work in aside from possibly finding better job opportunities. And when you do call on them, be sincere.

Be more techie

Accept the changes that new technologies can offer. Learn to use new softwares or computers and gadgets. You never know when your new knowledge can become handy.
