To become a barrister you need to get a qualifying law degree or take the common professional examination (CPE) or graduate diploma in law (GDL).
The CPE or GDL takes one year full-time or two years part-time and can cost up to six thousand four hundred and ninety pounds and you apply in the third or final year of your degree. When you have a degree a CPE or a GDL you start the bar vocational course (BVC) that is one-year part time or two years full time between seven thousand four hundred and thirty pounds and eleven thousand one hundred and eighty pounds.
Next you do one year pupillage which you get paid a minimum of five thousand pounds per six month term the first six months are experience gaining where the second six months are basically the barrister work. Pupillage is often described as a year long interview To pass, pupils must show all-round ability, particularly in advocacy, research and writing skills. Once you have completed pupillage you can apply for a tenancy and become a barrister.
