How to Show Grace and Modesty During a Promotion

Right behaviours when you get promoted.

A promotion at work is always a welcome change. It does not only boosts your influence or power in the office, but it also comes with an increase in salary and for some people, their ego. The latter, while beneficial to most, is a dangerous pitfall one which every newly promoted person should be wary. Office politics is always present and jealous co-workers are lurking in every corner.

Here is a basic guideline on how to keep your head and feet firmly on the ground.

Don't Change

Your new position might mean you are now supervising people you previously just worked with. This is understandably a very delicate situation and you may experience jealousy and resentment from them.

Basically, whatever your attitude towards your officemates prior to your promotion should never change. If you are the overtly friendly or the wise-cracking guy in the office, continue being one. If you suddenly stop doing so, people around you may start to lose their trust and become uncomfortable in your presence.

Ease into your new position

Just because your are now a step higher than most people doesn't mean you have to start shouting and pushing everybody around. While making them realize of your new authority is important, humility should always come first.

In a nutshell, you are starting in a new job. You must earn the trust of both your superiors and the people you once just worked with. Without this you cannot function properly in your new job.

Don't change your work attitude

A higher salary, a newfound authority and greater benefits and perks may go straight to your head. This is dangerous territory as these can cause you to slack off and show less zeal at your work than what you used to do.

Remember that it is your perseverance, your dedication in your job that gave you that promotion. Stopping these just because you got the promotion is a surefire way to start your step down the corporate ladder.

Work hard, if not harder, than what you used to.

A promotion gives you more power and authority to not only serve your company well, but also a chance to better your standing with your co-workers. A change in your standing in the office should never result to a change in your standing with your officemates.
