Stress and Job Burnout

How to prevent job burnout.

Stress in the work place is very real and seems to get worse as time goes on. You frequently hear the term employee burnout. Employee burnout is usually heard more often in the medical professions but it occurs in all jobs. It is not just employee burnout but employer burnout as well. We live in a fast paced world with more demands placed on us in our jobs as well as at home. These greater demands cause increased stress. Physical symptoms began to occur with this type of stress and you see time lost from jobs. There are things that can be done to slow down burnout and decrease the amount of stress in the work place.

Why Job Burnout?

Both employers and employees may experience burnout. The high demand for production or increase in workloads place stress on everyone. To be competitive in today's marketplace the pace has to be picked up as well as the amount of work put out. Employers feel the need to push employees because they are pushed. Employees feel that in order to keep their jobs they must increase their performance. It is a push-push game. After a time this causes something that is called burnout. Burnout is nothing more than a group of symptoms both physical and emotional that occurs with time in a high stress job.

Methods to Prevent Stress Related Job Burnout

The amount of stress related to job burnout can be decreased. Stress is never going to be totally absent. Considering the payout in employee job satisfaction and money saved for stress related physical and emotional symptoms should be enough for employers to look at methods for the reduction of job related burnout. One of the easiest and least expensive methods to help with the reduction of burnout is to allow employees a means of verbalizing their concerns in a constructive manner. This can be done through round table discussions, suggestion boxes, and other ways to get their concerns across. Round table discussions may allow employees and employers to verbalize concerns and issues in a constructive manner with all working towards a solution to issues. Suggestion boxes are great tools if they are used. Use a way that demonstrates these suggestions have been reviewed and that the company is really looking at the suggestions to see if they can work. What about having someone that is neutral that employees and employers can go to so they can work through some of the stress related problems? This also can pay for down time that is seen when employees have stress related symptoms. Events and incentives are excellent methods to decrease the amount of job stress.

No matter what is done there will always be job related stressors. The effort that is put forth in trying to control job burnout does not have to be costly but can save employers and employees enough money that the savings is well worth the effort to make the needed changes. By helping to control stress in the work place and prevent burnout the amount of sick time and the number of on the job injuries will decrease. It is not hard to do if employers are will to put forth the effort.
