The Importance of Taking Breaks at Work

Many people fail to take adequate breaks while they are at work. They reason that if they keep going until 5:00pm, they will be able to complete their work in a more efficient manner and be able to fully enjoy the evening. But is that really how it works? Here we consider why it's so important to take breaks.

Burnout

Everyone is human, and that means that we all get tired and worn out if breaks are not taken at work. It does not matter whether you work full or part-time from home or in a traditional workplace setting, it is still important to take breaks. Even if all you take is 15 minutes during an 8 hour work day, you can use that time to refresh yourself and feel more energised for the rest of the day that lies ahead. People who work continually face complete and utter burnout. What good is a burnt out employee? Physical exhaustion can lead to chronic headaches, fatigue, an inability to concentrate properly and the normal sleep pattern can also be disturbed.

You Have Earned It

Some employees feel guilty if they take breaks to have lunch or to have a quick snack, especially if they have a looming deadline ahead of them. But the truth of the matter is that breaks feature in as part of the average workday and should be taken. Breaks are earned by salaried as well as hourly employees. The next time you feel guilty for taking a break, just consider the fact that you are entitled to a break and should take it.

More Alert

Employees who take adequate breaks at work will find that they are more alert and productive than employees who work through until it is time to clock off and go home. No one will thank you if you skip lunch, but fail to complete your day's work to a high level. You owe it to yourself as well as your employer to take breaks that you are entitled to. The result will be a better and more efficient employee. That is a quality that employers highly prize.

Taking adequate breaks at work is very important. It will help to refresh employees as they divert their minds and attention for a few minutes periodically throughout the day and employers will have better employees working for them who have more to offer than people who are faced with constant burnout and fatigue.
