Many college students are now starting or soon going to start their summer internships. Working in the corporate world is not only a great way to make some summer cash, but it is also a great way to prepare for graduation.
In today's economy, more and more college graduates are finding it tough to find meaningful jobs. To ensure you aren't moving back to your parents' basement after college graduation, secure yourself a full-time job with your internship employer by following some small, simple, yet high-impact steps.
Smile
It is true that smiling goes a long way. Being the new guy in the office is never easy, especially when you are only there for a few months. Smiling makes you much more approachable. It usually turns into others introducing themselves when you pass them in the hallway. Even if it doesn't transform into a conversation, people will notice you, and at least pass you a greeting. You will meet and recognize more faces than you can imagine. And more importantly, they will recognize you, and when you need their help for an all important assignment, they will be more willing to help.
Go to work early
If your hours are 8am to 5pm, get to your office by 7:50am, before the majority of the office starts rolling in. This way, anyone and everyone walking past your desk will notice that you had arrived earlier than they did. If your manager sees you on the way to his office, he will most definitely be impressed. It also gives you a chance to meet others who might not work in your department.
Ask questions
Don't be afraid to ask questions. In fact, asking questions is a great way to start a conversation and build a certain level of comfort with your coworkers. Everyone likes being a mentor as it makes them feel smart and important. Be sure not to ask the same person all your questions as this can annoy them. Spread them around, ask each coworker a few. This way, you have a connection with more people.
Be friendly
Simply put, don't be an ass. The corporate world is one place where nice guys shine. Even if your work is sub-par, having some great relationships with your coworkers can make up for it. Personality and attitude are more important to employers than your technical skills. They can always teach you the knowledge you need. However, they cannot teach you to be friendly. Be a joy to be around and work with.
These simple tips will help you broaden your networking base. When its time to graduate, be sure to make use of all your contacts within the company to secure yourself a full-time job.
