Veterinarian's Life

How to become a veterinarian and the benefits they have.

The job of a veterinarian is very interesting. There are lots of interesting facts about being a veterinarian. They constantly work with animals. Also, they use what human doctors use in their offices. Unfortunately, there are no chances for promotion. To become a veterinarian, a person must complete four years of college. During that time they work on subjects like biology and animal science. After that, the student takes a test to get their license. In the end, the person is left with a great job.

Being a veterinarian involves duties that they must complete daily. One of them is the job of performing surgery. Veterinarian's, due to the many animal disease present, can perform surgery to help an animal get well. Another duty that a veterinarian has is to treat minor illnesses. Illnesses, like rabies, can cause problems in animals and humans. It is very important that veterinarians quarantine this disease. Finally, the veterinarian has the duty of inspecting food. They inspect the produce in a food industry to make sure no disease is contained in the produce. Those are some of the duties of a veterinarian.

Veterinarians work long hours during their job. They normally work sixty hours at week. If they work as solo practitioners, they can work weekends. That is the schedule of a veterinarian.

A veterinarian earns a pretty good salary. The normal earning for when they start their job is $35,800 a year. As they gain experience, their salary moves the average $66,590 a year. Finally, their ultimate salary can be $118,430 a year. That is the earning of this job.

There are many locations where a veterinarian can work. One is an animal hospital. Another place where a veterinarian is useful is a farm. The last place that veterinarians can work is at a zoo. All these places at which a veterinarian can work are either indoor or outdoor. That is where veterinarians can work.

There aren't a lot of levels of positions for veterinarians. The people to whom they answer are either the federal agencies that own the clinic or the state's government. Also, the people who help out the veterinarians are either interns or pre-vet students. Those are the positions in the workplace.

The tools that veterinarians use are pretty much the same as doctors. They use a stethoscope, surgical instruments, and diagnostic equipment. These tools are used every day by the veterinarian. That is why these tools are so important.

Jobs in this field are growing very rapidly. The current demands have become way above normal. Also, the future outlook for this job is expected to have even more growth. That is the outlook of this job.

The undergraduate degree is one of the most important parts of becoming a veterinarian. During this time, a student must get their bachelor's degree. It takes between two to four years to get this degree. Also, they can major in biological and physical sciences, general arts, and humanity. Also there is the choice of pre-veterinary training at a Jr. College. One school a student can get this training from is Louisiana State University. Finally, the total cost of this degree comes to $56,376. That is the minimum requirement of education for becoming veterinarian.

After you get your bachelor's degree you can go to a veterinary school. There are twenty- seven colleges in the United States from which students can receive the degree. Some of the colleges are Louisiana State University, Colorado State University, and the College of Veterinary Medicine. The length of study for this degree is four years. The total cost of this degree is $47,989. Once the student gets its license, you must take test to show you are up to date on any veterinary advances. That is the graduate education for this job.

In conclusion, becoming a veterinarian still seems to be the job for me. With the cost of education and the time of going to school opposing my salary and my lack of chances for promotion, my job seems like it will be very difficult to start. Still, positive aspects, like working with animals, and having a job that can do so much for the world, are way better than the negative aspects. In the end this job is just to perfect for me.

I have been thinking of becoming a vet and I am currently looking online and thinking of talking to my vet about the job. Ive been having my own doubts about becoming a vet but your article really helped me realize that I can do this. I love animals and I was in school to become an elementary teacher even though I really don't have a passion for children. It finally dawned on me that I could become a vet. Animals have always had a strong hold on my heart, for example; in my 19 years being alive I have had two cats and two dogs. My cats died when they were about 18 and I still have my dogs and I love them to death. The more I think about being a vet the more I think about how stupid I was not to think of it earlier. Thank you so much for shareing your experience because now I am positive that I want to be a vet. Thank you!

I have wanted to become a vet for a long time but I was having doubts because of the cost to go to school for 8 years. Now that I have read this article I am having less doubts because I realized that you do it for the love of animals and I want to help them. I will find a way to make it through college just for the animals. This article opened my eyes more about why I want to become a veterinarian and why I would love to.

Dearest Little Billy,

I am a veterinarian and I would like to shed some light upon you and all of your misguided readers as to the truth about veterinarians. Let\'s begin. Firstly, we don\'t constantly work with animals. Many times we work very closely with the owners, explaining to them the condition of their pets. Also, there are many, many opportunities for a promotion. It all depends on where and who you work with or for. While it is true that you have to attend undergraduate school before veterinary school, you don\'t have to complete a undergraduate degree. Many students go to veterinary school after only two years of undergraduate school. However, they still must take the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) to get in.

Not all veterinarians perform surgery every day. There may be many days where you simply provide preventative medicine, such as vaccinations. I chuckled (aka wet my pants) after reading how you described the horrible and life threatening disease of rabies as a minor illness. Rabies is a very serious disease. Serious like the man with candy driving the van with no windows. You want to stay away from it. Next, veterinarians don\'t inspect produce. Ever. When\'s the last time you went to the supermarket and saw the vet checking out a head of lettuce? Granted I do enjoy a couple of melons every now and then, but we are not in charge of inspecting the nation\'s produce supply. We are however granted the right to inspect the nation\'s meat supply. The USDA hires veterinarians to do this job.

Veterinarians have different hours. Not all vets work 60 hour weeks. Some work much less, some much more. It all depends on what that person wants. This will also change the person\'s salary. The average vet graduates and begins with a salary of around 70,000 dollars. As the years go by that person can negotiate for salary increases and bonuses. It\'s not unusual for veterinarians to make over 100,000 dollars a year when all is said and done. I can\'t think of one clinic that is owned by the federal government. While there are some vets that work for the federal government, most clinics are privately owned. Also, pre-vet students and interns are not the only people that work at a vet office. There are receptionists, vet techs, vet nurses, residents, externs, interns, students, etc.

You are correct in saying that there is a great need for vets. There is a shortage of veterinarians and there are many programs in place to help students become vets. You need to have a very good grade point average (somewhere around a 3.8) and a good GRE score (the higher the better). It is also very good to have some veterinary experience. Many people can\'t make it into vet school because it is very competetive and decide to go to med school instead. Also, the cost of vet school varies from place to place. It is usually more if you are an out of state student. Just be sure to check at whichever university you want to go to.

In conclusion, the veterinary profession is a great one. There are many positive things about it and hey if you don\'t make it, just go to medical school. I\'m sure the D.O. schools would be happy to have you along. But if you try hard, eat your veterinarian inspected veggies, drink you pasturized milk, say your prayers to whichever God you worship, and buy on U.S. manufactured products, you too may be able to partake in one of the greatest professions in the world!

Best of luck!

Wow, That was a hillarious depiction of what it is to be a vet. It is really hard and just because you love animals does not mean you would make a good vet. I am glad someone covered what this article did not...I love the job, but you have no idea what you are getting yourself into. Hard classes and competition. Plus, working at a vet hospital is fun, but you basically just do disgusting menial tasks. As well, you get exposed to a lot of disgusting things...like mange. And getting covered in pee is an almost daily occurance...as well you can get fecal matter shot into your eyes (anal glands!)....if you can deal with that stuff and not complain every second, you might have a shot. Maybe.
