Gang Violence in America

Insights on America's gang problem and a true story about a gang attack.

Gang violence is becoming more and more of a problem in America today. Local Street gangs make it dangerous for someone to walk down the Street. Or come home from work, or pick up your kids at school.

This is a bigger threat then most people know. Most of this gang activity is influenced Rap music and MTV music videos. And in most neighborhoods your kid has to make one of two choices; join one of the gangs, or become a victim of one.

But joining a gang doesn't make you safe. It gets worse after that. Then comes the gang wars which your kid will be fighting in. your house may get shot up or your kid may get shot by a cop because he pulled out a gun at the wrong time in the wrong place.

These are the kind of things that come out of your local Street gangs. And they think they're being cool. Getting shot at isn't cool at all. And with gangs comes drugs, too. The last thing you want your kid to do is join a gang. This is no game.

Video games like Grand Theft Auto don't help. If you are going to allow your kids to play these games then let them know that it is only a video game and not a message for him to do these things in real life.

Games can be harmless fun only if you teach them right from wrong. You need to do whatever you can to keep your kid out of gangs in keep them in school. I live in a very bad neighborhood so I know what a gang can do to a nice place in a short time.

They take out everything good about the place you live in and destroy family values. Don't let it happen to your neighborhood. I live in Las Vegas, and at the casino that my father works at five gang members jumped a guy making his rounds.

They were hitting him with their belts and throwing things on him. That is the result of local Street gangs in America.

Good job Nick i really liked the article. Good choice of topics also. i think that it is one that is often over looked or just plain ignored by some adults and even kids. Put the big problem is that it is affecting younger and younger kids all the time as they try to find a place in society.
Even in Canada in the small city i live in there is alot of gang related shootings and stabbings.
Goode work man. Keep writing.

man hip hop does not affect people joining gangs, it all has to do with the financial envviroment

i think that we should stop gang violence because it's not fair that innocent people are the one's getting hurt.also because not only they are hurting them but they are hurting their love one's too.this is why i think that we should stop gang violence.
#12 by Concerned Citizen, Mar 22, 2008
Excellent article; short, sweet and to the point. I would like to add that community action is our best line of defense. A majority of the problem with keeping gang activity under control is that the public is either unaware of it\\\'s existence, or fear of retaliation if they react. The fear is legitimate, because the nature of a greater portion of gang members is ruthless, and oblivious to consequence. However, if nothing is done, we will lose an unimaginable amount of priceless individuals. We were not put here to kill one another and terrorize communities. We can all do something wonderful with our time on this planet, and it\\\'s never too late to start. I commend you for picking this topic, for I feel that it does not get the attention it deserves.

i think gang violence should end. its destroying the world(mostly america). this article is great. but i feel bad for you since you live in las vegas *no offence*
#16 by nats, Apr 23, 2008
i think this is a great writtin artical...though i do think that most people join gangs not becuase of the music they listen to...rather the environment in which they live in... if somebody is angry because somebody told them somethiing negative...of course violent lyrics in music is possibly going to add more feul to the fire...

This is Ridiculous, this violence of gangs needs to be stopped and it needs to be stopped quickly

#20 by Acacia, May 13, 2008
In my personal opinion i dont believe that some of what u are saying is true. Hip-Hop and MTV aren't the major influence on someone being involved in a gang. Actually everyones reasons for being in a gang could be completly different. I dont think that judge somone in a gang or discussing it is going to make a difference. If anyone really wants to help they need to take action! I believe that these kids need more help than punishment.

very good job, you picked good topis to talk about and it was all good. i think that some people dont get what you are saying though. rap music does have a big influence on what kids do. you here about the \"cool\" rappers doing it so it makes the kids think that it is cool to do. not saying that they are going to go out and shoot someone because of it, but it helps them think about it. gang violence should stop and it should stop soon, im totally with you on this whole thing. am doing a speech on gang violence and this gave me some more ideas to talk about. thank you

I think you have a hirely valid point; how ever the comments above it is not just America where babies are taking to guns and weapons and this awful disire to kill.

It has taken England by storm; families will get attacked for random things. The society that america portrays is spilling over to the East!!!!

This gun crime and gang lifestyle needs to be stopped and soon. Or the whole world will be paying for more lifes!
#29 by ciderlout, Jul 1, 2008
Coool african (dunno what country) saying: "It takes the whole village to raise a child". Community action is esential. All adults (parent or not) should always be looking after all the kids (your child or not)

I know you are absolutely right, I do think that gang violence should be condomed from our world peace.
#33 by silent, Sep 23, 2008
We need peace in this world!!! and all gangs should go to jail and kill each other, because after all they are in gangs to get killed or to kill, get hurt, or in a wheel chair. Inocent people shouldn't be getting hurt or killed when gang wars are present!

I agree with you on some parts but music has nothing to do with gang violence. like you said you live in a gang infested neighborhood. i grew up in a terrible neighborhood and i listen to rap music and im not in a gang. it all has to do with who the person hangs with or what they are going thru in their family personal life. people that join gangs to me are jus looking for a sense of love and belonging to. if the persons family shows them no love or doesnt care about the they do then the persons going to go find t somewhere else and if its in a terrible neighborhood their gonna find it in gangs....
#37 by Eric Garcia, Oct 14, 2008
personally i believe you are a horrible writer. your knowledge of gangs seems a little one sided. gangs do not do what they do to "be cool" most of them do it to survive because that is the only place they can recieve the help, protection, or care they desire

I think gang actvity is all ones choice no one can influnce them either way. I live in knoxville and the two biggest gangs in our area are the Crips and Bloods. I have friends that are invovled with da crips and the only react violently if the feel disrespected.

I am ex gang member from Salford, i fully understand why kids fall into this way of life, with what goes on in there own homes, some kids don't have that male roll model to look up too, they don't want to aspir to anything, because the media and the rest seem to want to glamourize crime.
#45 by Maria Ann, Nov 6, 2008
Unless you have live a life where you feel your gang is the only people in the world who care about you, you will not understand why gangs are so strong and are growing so fast. The kids who are taken in by the games, music videos, and lyrics about gang related activity are just trying to be cool. However, for those in the gangs with the \\\"ride or die\\\" attitude are apart of such things like gangs because its all they can really call family. I don\\\'t think some people realize the \\\"hardcore\\\" crimes are coming from the confused and unloved childern and teens. I have associated with gang and partook in gang related activities. I had their backs because they always had mine, even when my parents did not. I had been sexually assulted by a neighbor, choked by my step-father, beat by my mother, and abandoned by my sperm donor and my family was now fLYpSYd3. Please understand, gangs are a big problem but the kids and teen in them 99% of the time have a deep wound that most \\\"authority\\\" cares nothing about. Believe me.

dude i agree with you. dont listen to the haters of your opinion. some of their statements are right but also they are being hipacrits. they are looking at it one sided as well. i live in a half way house for youth with addiction problems and from my experiences the music comes with the life style and will provoke you to do the same thing the artist is raping about because they\'re popular bad asses and the individuals in gangs want to be the same. ive lived the life style. dont get me wrong i like rap music but it really truely does influence alot of troubled youth

As a survivor of an attack and "gangs" are all a result of someone's laziness or ignorance. Or it's all about financial and survival of the fittest.

I have to ask all the people who believe that this guy is an amazing writer: Do you have any idea what you're talking about? Do you believe that saying gang violence is wrong and must be stopped will actually make a difference? Everything he's talked about is pretty much common knowledge.
Some of the people here say that gang violence has to stop because they're tired of little kids getting killed all the time. Where did you get that little tidbit of information? Did you just happen to see the cover of a newspaper? Maybe you should delve a little deeper into the issue of gang violence in this country and realize that more than just innocent people are victims.
We all know it's wrong and you don't have to grow up in a gang infested area to know why people join. I agree with the people in this thread who seem to know what they're talking about. All that many of them are looking for is a sense of community, of being wanted, having someone look out for you. Thats what anyone whose grown up in human society wants. And most of them will fight to keep that sense of belonging.
