We Have Too Many Celebrities, Get Them Out of Here

Pick up a newspaper, switch on the television or open up Yahoo on your Internet browser and the likelihood is that you will be faced with some lame story or other centered around a celebrity. We have always been celebrity conscious in some way but if you go back a few decades, the celebrities of the world were genuinely famous people who had achieved something worthwhile.

We now live in a society where some people are famous for being famous. Do something outrageous, get your name and face on the front page of a tabloid newspaper and suddenly your are a full-blown celeb. It has now reached epidemic proportions where we are constantly bombarded with so-called news stories about these "famous" people that are anything but newsworthy. What is it that Paris Hilton does anyway?

This obsession with celebrity culture is absolutely everywhere. Take a certain John Smeaton as an example. This was the airport worker who came to the aid of the police when two extremists drove a Jeep Cherokee full of explosives into the doors of Glasgow Airport. Commendation to Mr Smeaton. Well done! Does his action really merit being given a column to write in a national newspaper? Am I dreaming or was he actually invited to the USA to give advice on security? He punched a guy! How on earth does that qualify him for the new positions he was given. How did it all happen? Because he became a celebrity overnight. That's how.

Now that the world of television has also become obseesed with lightweight celebrities, we are now consigned to watching popular game shows that have these second-rate individuals as contestants playing for charity. We want to see real people win real money! Let the program makers donate cash to charity, get rid of the celebs and give us our game shows back.

Please get rid of the glut of celebrities who are forced upon us by the media who erroneously believe this is what we want. Bring back real people and "get the celebrities out of here".

People are Going Crazy

Just yesterday in our local paper there was a man arrested for putting his five year old in a clothes dryer and turning it on causing burns to her lower back. It is sad when children can't even trust their own parents.

In the same paper were seven different DUI'S listed, as well as a man that was arrested for the rape of a 13 year old, a young 18 year old man that bought an arsenal with a bogus check. what were his intentions with all these guns? Thankfully we will never know because he was stopped before being able to use them. He had bounced over 5000 dollars in checks on an account that was closed, he had bought nine weapons total with two of them being military assault rifles.

This is just one days newspaper that covers a small area of news. Just think of all the sadness in the world if we were to put all the papers together. It is so sad to see what this world has come to. We need to make changes before it is to late!

Think before you do something that you will regret!

All of the things above could have been changed if only people had thought before they acted.

Stop and think! Look at someone and smile, don't frown! Help someone! If you see someone needing a little help don't walk around that person. Smile at them and help them! Pay it forward! If someone does something for you, then you do something nice for someone else!

Try to do at least one good deed everyday! It won't hurt you and you will feel better after you have done it. It is so much easier to be nice to someone than it is to be cruel!

Try it for a few days and see if you don't feel better about yourself and others!

Interesting Information About Newspaper and the Media

What are Acta Diurna, corantos, diurnals, and broadsheets?

What is the significance of Publik Occurrences Both Foreign and Domestick, the Boston News-Letter, the New-England Courant, the Pennsylvania Gazette, and the New York Weekly Journal?

What factors led to the development of the penny press? To Yellow Journalism?

What are the similarities and differences between wire services and feature syndicates?

When did newspaper chains begin? Can you characterize them as they exist today?

What are the different types of newspapers?

Why is the newspaper an attractive medium for advertisers?

Acta Dinurna is an account of the deliberations of the Roman senate; an early “newspaper”. Corantos is a one-page news sheet on specific event printed in English but published in Holland and imported into England by British booksellers; an early “newspaper”. Diurnals are daily accounts of local news printed in 1620's England: forerunners of our daily newspaper. Broadsheets (“aka” Broadside) were early colonial newspapers imported from England, single-sheet announcements or accounts of events.

These titles are significant to the newspaper medium since they were basically the base of the newspaper. These broadsides consisted of a single paged article that showed important news events. Although it did not hold a significant amount of information, these broadsheets led to the development of the newspapers that we have today. This form of getting news to the public didn't last long but at the moment, it seemed to be revolutionary.

The factors that led to the development of the penny press were urbanization, growing industries, movement of workers to the cities, and increasing literacy. In order to keep up with the demands of people, the penny press was released to appeal to everyone since money was scarce. Yellow Journalism came about when Joseph Pulitzer, owner of the New York World newspaper, and William Randolph Hearst had to compete in order to make their newspapers successful. Articles such as drawings, and giant headlines were a part of the Yellow Journalism.

Feature syndicates were clearing houses for work and columnists, cartoonists, and other creative individualists, providing their work to newspapers and other media outlets. Wire Services are news-gathering organizations that deliver radio broadcasts. I am not sure about the similarities and differences

Newspaper chains were created in the 1920's. Hearst and Scripps owned the most powerful chains in the 1920's. There are most likely even more newspaper chains today. These chains also make it easy to show international news because we will be able to get information from multiple sources in different countries.

The types of newspapers are large metropolitan dailies, suburban small town dailies, weeklies and semiweeklies, ethnic press, alternative and distant press, and commuter papers. These papers vary based on race, area, and the demand in that area. In most areas, the most popular paper is the Sunday paper.

Newspaper is an attractive medium for advertisers because it is inexpensive which means that more people will buy it. Also, it's the newspapers mobility and availability in basically all stores makes it the perfect medium for advertisement. For the most part, newspapers are printed everyday.

Now, I want you to consider how different things are if you could absorb large quantity of English words like a sponge which may actually retain in your brain for much longer. Just think for a minute how your life changes if you could actually remember all those words rather than forgetting them as what you have been doing lately.

Well, learning English and even other foreign languages require certain skills and technique. With the appropriate methods, you could learn English with ease and in less time than you previously thought possible.

Here, I will guide you with tips to assist you mastering the language effectively. The nightmare of not being able to acquire 10,000 English words that you have struggled to learn can quickly fix into your mind in a series of tips that you can begin to put into action in less than 120 days. But, bear in mind that you should follow these tips constantly and correctly. By following them closely, you will discover that how easily to acquire large amounts of words of your language choice rather than forgetting them as most of you likely have been doing.

Forming a Sentence from Some Short Phrases

The foremost step to learn English is to practice the words or vocabulary that you have learnt by making a sentence. You can first start forming short phrases and later forming them into a long sentence. For example, you have some short phrases of “red clothes”, “a woman”, “is going to”, “tomorrow night” and “put on”, and with these phases you can form them into “A woman is going to put on red clothes tomorrow night.”

Listen, Imitate, and Practice

Listening and imitating should go together to grasp English words faster. Listening is always the best option to learn words or vocabulary faster as you will be more concentrate to catch each word being said either from the broadcast or radio. At the same time, you should employ the LIP method: Listen, Imitate and Practice.

Immerse Yourself in Learning

Use all your five senses to learn. You should listen to English, read English, touch English, smell English, and taste English. In a nutshell, you should immerse yourself to learn English by beginning to think in a more natural or diverse form of English communication and writing.

Be Consistent While Learning

Rome wasn't built in one day. Learning English or any other languages require your patience, perseverance, determination and dedication. Therefore, you should put in more effort than the native speaker and try to grab every chance you have to get yourself exposed to the commonly used words, expressions, phrase words or even proverbs in English communities. I assure you that your hard work will be rewarded one day.

Bring Along a Dictionary Wherever You Go

Use a quality and comprehensive dictionary to guide your grammar. You should always bring a small pocket dictionary with you wherever you go. This will help your understanding particularly when you encounter any English words that you do not know their meanings and usages. Specifically, whenever you see a new word, look it up in the dictionary. After looking up for its meaning, use it in your daily life.

Practice Makes Perfect

Practice as much as possible for the tenses you have just learnt. Remember to study the various forms of a new verb you came across to further grasping more words instead from the one new verb you have learnt. As there is no quick-fix solution to one's linguistic shortcomings, one can only master English by building a solid grounding in basic vocabulary and grammar and to use it to communicate as frequently as possible.

Knowing the Cultural Background is an Important Asset to Learning Faster

Besides learning the words or vocabulary, you are recommended to learn more about the culture of each language you learnt. When you understand the cultural background of the particular nation, you can better acquire more words in order to promote the better use of the language.

Do Not Hesitate to Ask Questions

Don't be afraid to ask questions. The more you ask, the more you grasp the words, the better you are. Learn as much as you could by attending English forums, conferences, seminars which are conducted by speakers from the English-speaking countries. An eager student will always learn more words than those who are a dummy.

Tricks to Remember Faster

One of the efficient methods to remember faster is by using the initials of phrases or sentences to form a group of easily memorize items. Below are some examples:

Example 1

To memorize the planet names which are arranged in a sequence: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto

Example 4

To memorize the planets correctly: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Ceres, Pluto, Xena

Example 5

To memorize the words of Algae, Fungi and Lichen

She is all gal (Algae) but he is a fun guy (Fungi). Both of them take a likin'(Lichen) to each other.

Example 6

To memorize the bones in he wrists in a sequence: Scaphoid, Lunate, Triquetral, Pisiform, Trapezium, Trapezoid, Capitate, Hamate

Some Ladies Took Pressure That They Can't Handle

Set Your Goal to Advance in Learning

You will need bricks to build a house. Similarly, you need single words or vocabulary to form a sentence. Therefore, English vocabulary is both essential for communicating and writing. Looking at the English book that you bought, you may start facing problem to have all these densely-packed vocabulary fixed into your mind. Here I want to show you my personal experience on how to remember the words or vocabulary in a more efficient way.

If your goal of learning is to remember 100 words a day, you are recommended to set the number up to 500 words a day. As human memory is very limited, so do not set the target of learning words to as low as 20 words and think that you will remember them instantly. The appropriate method is to memorize 500 words per day, so that at least 100 words will be retained in your mind. In this case, you might not be able to remember all the words you learnt. But, at least you have touched with these words once. For all those words that you are unable to remember, you bring them forward for the next day's task plus another 500 new words. The process of learning goes every day in the similar manner until you could fully fix them into your mind. If you find hard to memorize 500 words a day, you should at least learn 200 to 300 words a day. This type of learning will help your brain to remember the words better and they will remain longer there. Personally, I have employed this method to learn several languages at the same time, and I found it is very useful in learning languages.

Remember, it takes three months of regular intensive practice to improve one overall Band. Therefore, you should know your weaknesses, and set aside the maximum number of hours you can spend each day to practice the English words as frequent as possible. Each word that you learnt will require a certain degree of strategy or approach in order to enable you to make the best use of the time.

Grouping English Words According to Their Categories

Each English word can be grouped in accordance to its root, prefix or suffix. For example, the word with either the prefix of “dis”, “un”, or “in” attached carrying the opposite meaning from its base word. As in the word of “unhappy”, it means “not happy”; “discomfort” means “not comfort” and so forth. The word with the prefix “re” adding means “once again/ once more time” as in “re-arrange” which means “arrange again.” The word that ends in -cion, -tion-, -sion, -ence, -cy, -ness or -ance is always referred to a word of a noun; the ending of -ant, -tive, -able, or -ious is an adjective word; while a word with -ly ending refers to an adverb word. The verb with -ing attached means “is going to do/ decide to do”; when the base root verb is attached with -ing form, it can also appear in a noun form as in “driving (drive + ing)”; with -ed attached means “passive” or “past” happening. You are recommended to carefully study each group, the meaning of each word and how the words are used. That means by grouping the English word into its respective group, you are actually helping yourself to learn English words or vocabulary faster than expected. In short, taking these steps will help you widen your vocabulary, and by knowing when to use the words, you can write better.

Recycling and Repeating Method

If you target to memorize 200 words a day, try to group them into 4 groups with each time you memorize 50 words. You can do this during your meals time of breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper with each meal time memorizing 50 words to make them into a total of 200 words per day. Well, this method will be varied according to the individual due to the difference in memory ability. Though you may have slowly picked up 200 words per day, you do not have to force your brain to memorize everything. What you have to do is that you read the 50 words twice or three times each meal time for everyday's task. If you still could not remember the words, repeat and recycle the words for the following day plus other additional 100 or 200 words as scheduled. Repeat as many times as you could until you succeed to memorize all the words. By the end of several days, you will come to find that this method has improved your vocabulary tremendously.

Skimming Method

Skimming here means you get the main idea from a text, paragraph, phrase or any short sentences that contain words very quickly. That means you will read certain words at average speed all the way through. Specifically, you might read the words from the heading and the first sentence of each paragraph of a newspaper, magazine or any publications very quickly to catch a fair idea of the content. This is particularly useful when you have short of time for reading. Another way for you to skim the words is by running your eyes along all the lines of the text, so that you pick out the key words while at the same time ignoring those unknown words and “grammar” words (eg. To, and, is, the) which do not contribute to the main idea.

Scanning Method

Scanning is used to assist you to grasp certain words quickly for the information that you require. You may either skim quickly through the information or you may wish to scan for specific information. In either case, you let your eyes sweep across the text slowly and smoothly, beginning at the top left, and subsequently you try your way across and down of the text in a wavelike motion.

While scanning, you do not have to read every word. Instead, you guide your eyes with your first three fingers, or your index finger alone, or even the tip of a pen or a pencil to quickly pick up the words as your eyes sweep across each word of a sentence. This will prevent your eyes from wondering about all parts of the text. You can increase your general reading speed too, by following your finger with your eyes across the text as you read. You may occasionally stop for a moment to pick up some new words you have encountered, and then you proceed to read slowly back and forth, across and down the text.

Well, this method takes a little practice at first, but it is always the best way for your eyes to move quickly through the text without getting stuck and wasting time to read unnecessary information. You are more likely to search for new words within the text. Many studies have shown that how fast people can read by guiding their eyes across the text. You might be surprising to discover how fast you could pick up many words within a short period of time.

Be Aggressive: Attack!

Faster reading does not mean poorer comprehension. In most cases, moderate speed in reading is usually resulted in the improvement in vocabulary. Why I say so?

Our eyes cannot actually read. We read with our minds. Thus, getting information from the printed material ultimately comes down to concentration. The faster you read the more effort you get your eyes concentrated. It is like driving a car at 90 miles per hour (mph) as opposed to 40 mph. To drive at 90mph, it requires your total concentration to keep your car on the road. Therefore, faster reading is a great advantage to help your eyes grabbing more words. As much as possible, try to see what you are reading as what you are watching at the cinema as it will greatly improve your vocabulary.

In the list below, the key word is in column at the left. It is then repeated in the group of words to the right. As rapidly as possible, try locate the identical word, check it, and then move to the next line. Try to do most of this visually test rather than saying each word loudly.

Lip lid long left lip lap

Stand start stand strong stop torn

Wander willow window wanton wander worry

Vain vale vague vain value

Most might host most mass mort

Divide devoted have doing divine divide

Someone somewhere sooner somehow somebody someone

Week weak week meek leak seek

Hazy hazard hamper lazy dizzy hazy

Aide aid add aide also hide

Reform remake reclaim malformed reform form

Bubble raffle rubber blubber bubble

Fabulous famous fabulous fashion false fasten

Tranquilizer transfer relaxation tranquilizer transcribe transit

Expanding the Fixations

Your eyes must stop for you to read. The stop may last for a fraction of a second which is called a fixation. If you are reading a sentence that has 20 words and you need to stop at each word, you have actually made 20 fixations with each of the word takes you a fraction of a second. If, however, you can read 4 words with each fixation, you will have to make quarter of the stops that will definitely help you catching more words at an average speed.

You might ask me, “Chan, how do I do this?” The answer has to do with peripheral vision. To illustrate, hold your finger and try to look only at that finger. As you can see, such limited vision is impossible. Because of peripheral vision, you can see many things in the room besides your finger. Research has shown that the average reader can see approximately 2.5 words per fixation.

Now, we do an experiment by looking at the following phrase:

In the Bathroom

Did you make three fixations, once on each word, or did you fixate once on the three words? The key to expanding your fixations is to read words according to its main ideas. Your fixation point, as shown in the following example, will be under and between the words forming the thought unit, so that your peripheral vision can pick up what is on either side of the point. Now, read the following paragraph by fixating at each indicated. Notice how fast you could absorb the words like a sponge.

To accumulate# delicate respiratory tract# of intruders# or incompatible substances# and apprehension# began designing devices# mild heat treatment# including nearly all

Final Remark

You will benefit immensely by following the guidelines given in this article. It is hoped that this article will help pupils to remember words in a more interesting and creative way in order to score in their examinations, but more importantly to help them to pass through the dreaded English exams of IELTS, ESL, TOEFL, TSE, EFL, ESP and any other English related exams.
Win Insured by King's Great Mind

It is greatly insured that our king will be prosperous in the money he uses and be victorious against the rebels of America. The battles and retreats of the American forces are a sure sign of winning. The greatest minds are on our side as we chased the rebels across lands and across rivers. The injuries of the Continental army is not considered slaughter compared to what they have done to your houses and your properties by destroying and splitting the peace and unity we had together in tie with the great power Britain. The king has order a pursue and a blockage in the ports of Boston which will end this bloodshed for all. We have a win because we have the strongest and most powerful army in the world. Second the battles we have fought have been successful as the continental army has cowardly retreated saving only themselves. Third we have everything in perfect order and our plan is to be carried out very soon to indemnify your lands safely and prosperous for all.

Massacre Continues Everywhere

Boston Massacre was just the beginning of a great chain of slaughtering for America. The Boston Massacre occurred in early 1770, when British soldiers fired at the armless citizens killing many of them and leaving others wounded. This out of control sense must be stopped. They have chased our Continental troops and killed off more than half of them while we made our way to the Delaware River. They have destroyed our peace, cause pain and suffrage. The king has disrupted our independence and freedom. The massacre of our continental troops left us from 22,000 to fewer than 2000 troops. They shot at us and firing our marching men and took hold of everything we've got. We must stand together to hold these self evidence of natural rights and fight as one! Help us have prosperity and break free from British rule and their intolerable ways of massacre.

The Newspaper

Most anyone can find something they need in each section of the news paper. Rather it be information, a classified ad, or perhaps, it's entertainment one may be seeking.

As far as news papers may range they were set to be a basis for information. Which is why articles are written to be informative on a vast range of subjects, such as how the President is doing his job, or in related news, what may be going on with the War on terrorism. It also offers local news. Take in example, The Peoria Journal Star had a write up earlier this week, on a former Normal, Illinois teacher, being sentenced to twelve years in prison for committing sexual acts upon his students (www.pjstar.com).

There always seems to be something a person need, with little money to spend on this particular thing. Times like these is when you turn to the classified ads in your local news paper. A wide variety of items are listed in the classified ads, such as, cars, animals, electronics, or possibly a new career. Granted, a classified ad may or may not be a last resort, but according to Wikipedia, the net worth of the market for classified ads, was at an estimation of over $ 100 billion (www.wikipedia.com). Meaning, you aren't the only one out there who grabs a penny saver and searches desperately to find something they need, at a small price, and much less redtape than buying from a retailer.

Everyone has those days, where they're doing nothing more, than sitting around the house twiddling their thumbs. Here, is where the newspaper may come into play once again. Yes, the news paper is informative, but also entertaining, as well. If one were to flip through, somewhere near the back are many tidbits targeted at a persons entertainment. Such as, crossword puzzles, comics, maybe even a recipe or two. Or perhaps, someone is into to sports. That may also keep them entertained for a period of time.

Despite all these things, the news paper has come a very long way. It's been around since way back in the horse and buggy days. Although folks can get the things they desire from the T.V., and internet, the newspaper is still a major resource. In accordance with State of The News Media, more than half (54%) of The United States read the news paper sometime during a 7 day period (stateofthenewsmedia.org). Meaning, yes, even though the news paper may not be as popular as some of our other resources offered, it's still very useful for most, if not all, the information you may be seeking.

Internet Advertising Isn’t Enough: Getting Your Next Non-profit Fund Raiser More Ink

How can you get free advertising for your group or event? It's easy if you know how the various media organizations operate. Learn their approach to news and then you'll be getting more free plugs than you can count.

Be a contributor first

You have to realize that the media do not care about your organization any more or less than the next non-profit. In the eyes of the corporation, all non-profits just want something free or they want contributions or they want big, fat sponsorships. Don't focus on your next fund raiser. Try to distinguish yourself among all of the other groups who come begging for freebies and be a contributor. Remember what the media are in business to do: tell stories.

Give them a story they can't resist

How can you contribute? Give them a story. Not just a "we're having a big event for people to come and spend money" story, but a real, true, heart-wrenching or heart lifting story for them to eat up and splash all over the newspaper or TV screen. Does your non-profit provide help with debt relief? If so, find a success story of a client who has been helped and who is willing to be profiled.

Reporters are busy

Do your homework upfront so that you can sell the story to the reporter. Don't send a press release but have one prepared with all the who/what/where/why/how details answered including contact names (spelled correctly) and phone numbers. If the program you are seeking help with asks people to donate a car to charity, have all the technical details written out that you can email to the reporter.

Not all reporters will treat your story the same

You should be familiar enough with the local newspaper or broadcast news to know which reporters cover your type of story. If there are several to choose from, judge from previous stories they've written about how they approach emotional types of stories. You want someone you can count on to do your story justice. Then give that reporter a call. Tell them you know of a really interesting story that you feel you can trust them with. Ask if it's a good time to talk now or if you should call back. Make working with you easy for the reporter. They will appreciate working with you and will also look forward to the next time you call.

Mind your manners

After a reporter writes a story you've pitched, you owe them a phone call. Thank them and tell them you appreciate how they approached your story and that you felt they were fair. Tell them you look forward to working with them again. Be nice. Reporters receive calls every day from angry, rude and mean people. You will stand out as a welcome source just by having a pleasant attitude and using common courtesies. Follow up the call with a written thank you note. Most reporters will save them since they get so few.

Keep reporters in the loop

If something happens at a later date regarding a story they've written for you previously, contact the reporter and give them an update. They may choose to write a follow up story.

These ideas won't necessarily guarantee you get your stories in the paper or on the evening news, but you'll definitely get farther than most people. Don't be afraid to call a reporter or editor - they are always looking for new stories and rely on the community to provide those leads.

10 Tips for Reading in a Foreign Language

When you look at a page filled with writing in a language you aren't yet fluent in, the task of reading and understanding it all can be daunting indeed. But if you really want to improve your proficiency and your vocabulary, you don't have much choice; you're almost certainly going to have to do some reading. But don't be scared! There are simple ways to make reading in a foreign language easier and to help you get the most you can out of it.

Choose material at the right level

Seems obvious, right? But it can be hard to do, especially if you're the only one around to judge. If you're assigned reading for a formal class, of course, it makes things a bit easier; chances are your teacher wouldn't give you something to read that was completely beyond you. If you're picking something out for yourself, though, be careful that it's not just plain too hard-you won't understand, you'll get discouraged, and it'll just be a bad experience all around. A student of intermediate Spanish, for example, probably isn't ready to tackle Don Quixote, but should be able to handle children's books and can probably work through a newspaper article. Use common sense, and remember that when you were learning to read English, you had to work your way up in the same manner. When in doubt, ask for advice. And, if you try to start something and it's clear that you haven't learned half the grammar in it, or you have to look up every other word, chances are you should try something a little simpler first.
On the other hand, be careful not to underestimate yourself-if something seems too easy, it probably is. You should have to work at it at least a little. If you don't challenge yourself at all, you won't get anywhere.

Take the time to do a good job

Deciding to take your French newspaper with you to the doctor's office waiting room, or trying to squeeze in a chapter of that German novel while dinner's in the oven might seem like a smart, time-saving idea, but if you're still learning the language and this is practice rather than pleasure, you'll want to work on it at a time when you aren't likely to be interrupted suddenly, not to mention when you won't feel rushed to finish in a certain (small) period of time. Assume that it's going to take longer to read something in a second or third language than it would in your native language, and try to set aside some free time accordingly. Patience is a virtue, remember. Read slowly and try to take in as much as you can, instead of hurrying through and only picking up the words you recognize right away. Think about the words you're seeing and how they fit together, and try your best to really understand. There's nothing worse than reading something and then realizing you don't have a clue what it was about-rushing yourself isn't the only reason that happens, but it's definitely on the list.

Don't distract yourself

It's hard to focus on a foreign language when the TV across the room is yapping English at you, or you roommate feels the need to break your concentration every few minutes to tell you something. You'll read better without distractions. Ask other people to leave you alone for a little while, or put on headphones to discourage them. Turn off televisions and radios, or, if you're the type who needs background noise to concentrate, try listening to instrumental music. The goal is to keep words away except for the ones in front of you. Even if (like me) you normally can tune out distractions when you're reading, reading in another language is very different and it's surprisingly difficult not to let more familiar sounds like music or a bad movie get into your head. Your brain wants to latch onto what it recognizes better. Your goal is to get it used to recognizing another language just as well.

Stay on task

Just as it's harder to keep from getting distracted when you're reading in a foreign language, it's also harder to keep your mind from wandering. Focus! Really think about what you're reading. If you catch yourself thinking about something else, force yourself back to what's in front of you. Back up if you need to; sometimes your mind wanders and your eyes keep reading, the two of them don't seem to connect. You might miss something important that way.
If you just can't seem to stay on track, take a break. Do something else for a few minutes, or just think about whatever's distracting you and try to be done with it. Then try reading some more. Some people can start working on something and stay engrossed for hours. Some people concentrate better in short bursts, so if you're having a hard time, don't be afraid to just read a little at a time with short breaks in between… as long as you're disciplined about getting back to the next piece!

Tackle manageable segments

Most projects are easier if you break them down into smaller pieces. This is especially true of longer works (think several chapters of a book), but can also help with smaller reading projects, especially for beginners. Work on a page, a paragraph, or even a few sentences at a time. The less comfortable you are with the reading, the smaller the pieces should be. Focus on understanding one section before you move on to the next.

Don't translate

No, seriously. To really be fluent in a language, you have to be able to think in it. Think about how time consuming it is to think of the word you want to say, figure out the equivalent word in the other language, and then say it-you waste just as much time seeing a word in that language and finding its English equivalent in order to understand. One of your goals in practicing your reading skills is to build an understanding of what the words mean on their own, without relying on their English counterparts. (And hey, some words and phrases just don't translate.)
It's not easy, and it won't come naturally. If you're in the very beginning stages of learning a language, it may not happen at all-yet. Practice is the only way to get to that point. When you read, go slowly and think about the words without changing them. Picture what they mean. Focus on concepts. Don't worry about what it would say if it was English. It's not. And the less you use English as a go-between, the more automatically you'll understand your new language.

Use a dictionary

Of course, if you run into a word you just don't know, you'll need to translate it, so keep a bilingual dictionary handy when you read so that you don't have to go hunting when you're stuck. (Although the truly bold who are also proficient enough in the language might want to invest in a monolingual dictionary and thus continue to avoid translation.) If you don't have a dictionary and you're struggling with Spanish, French, Italian, or Portuguese, try http:www.wordreference.com; it's a great resource for both single words and phrases. You can find reliable online dictionaries for many other languages as well. Whatever you do, don't use an internet translator. They're wrong or misleading the vast majority of the time.
However, you shouldn't use your dictionary as a crutch. Don't reach for it the instant you don't recognize a word. First, finish the sentence, or even the paragraph if it seems reasonable. Often an individual word doesn't affect your understanding that much, and it might be more disruptive to your reading to stop a look it up than to go on without it. If it's an important enough word that you do need it in order to understand what's going on, finish the sentence anyway and see if you can figure it out from the context. If you still don't get it, then it's dictionary time. If you get the gist and still want an exact definition, or if you've decided to skip that word for the time being, make a note of it and come back later. (It's a good idea to read with a pencil in hand.)
Even when you read in English, chances are you come across an unfamiliar word every now and then, but you probably don't rush to look it up immediately unless it's really important. Try to approach foreign language reading the same way. If you have a pretty good understanding of the sentence without that one word, it can wait.

Don't expect to understand everything

Yes, you read that correctly, and yes, I know that's the point. But remember that you're still learning, and if everything you read was going to be clear as a bell you wouldn't need to be reading this. You're almost guaranteed to run into words you don't know, grammar structures you haven't learned yet, and idioms that don't make any sense because you can't use a dictionary to translate them. It's okay not to understand everything perfectly the first time you read, or even the second time. If something just doesn't make sense for you, don't let it keep you from understanding as much as you can of what's left. Chances are you'll get the basic idea even without that particular detail or two (or three or four…). Write down what's confusing and puzzle over it later instead of wasting time on it now. Ask someone for help if you need it. But first, keep reading! You can always come back to it and piece it all together once you do understand.

Take notes

I said it a few times already, but so many students neglect to do this that it bears repeating. When you run into a word or phrase that you don't know, either copy it down or mark the page so that you know to come back and work on it later. After all, you won't learn anything if you don't even keep track of what needs to be learned.

Read it again

Pretty self-explanatory. The first time you read through something in another language, you're puzzling out what it means as you go. When you're finished and sort of know what it all said, you should read it over again. Chances are you'll be able to read faster and you'll understand it better than you did the first time. You might even pick up on something you missed the first time around.
If you have a list of things to look up, do that before rereading so that you can fit those words in as you go.
If you're reading something in segments (tip #5), it can also be helpful to read each individual segment twice before moving on, for pretty much the same reasons. First time to understand the words, second time to really fit it all together.

Good luck and happy reading!

Zero Tolerance

For example if a person pick pocketed and was caught and there was a zero tolerance policy then the pickpocket-er would not have been given any tolerance.

My views on it are that it is an efficient way of preventing crime as criminals will not be let off and therefore may encourage them not do to it again. Some people have different views on this, some people say that it is unfair that they are given no tolerance toward there crime witch may have been an accident.

I think it will be good is it was introduced as the crime as it may reduce the crime rate here. Over the past few years the crime rate of the USA and many other countries has fallen and is falling as shown in the line graph to the left (for USA). Is this due to Zero tolerance? In Singapore they have a zero tolerance policy. So have the crime rate decreased? Well Singapore has a lower criminal rate per 100,000 people than the USA. With Singapore as 46 criminals out of 100,000 and USA with 981 criminals. This clearly shows that crime rates have decreased and that the zero tolerance here would be a good thing. Will we make our 504 criminals per 100,000 people to 46 like Singapore maybe not but it will make a difference.

Why You Should Read The Newspaper

“Have you heard, that Trademe guy sold his site for $700 million!”

“No, who sold what for how much?”

“The guy that made Tradme sold his site for $700 million, and he's only made it for about three years!”

“When was this?”

“What, you haven't heard?”

Reading the daily newspaper is very important, because the newspaper provides up to date current events both in your own country and around the world. This way, by simply reading the daily newspaper, you will be able to keep up with what's going on around you. You will be able to know when and where there's been a big disaster, or if someone declared war on your country you will be able to evacuate because you were noticed earlier than others.

Also, reading the newspaper is one thing, but reading itself is a benefit already. By reading, you are exposed to new words which improves your vocabulary. Nearly everything today revolves around reading, either in the classroom reading a textbook or out in the wild reading a map.

These are just a few reasons as to why reading the newspaper daily is important. It not only gives you knowledge of the world around you but you are also benefited from the reading itself. So, just spending a few minutes a day reading the newspaper may end up saving your life.
