Feelings between Catholics and Protestants grew bitter. Each side was convinced that adherence to its belief was the only way to salvation. Each group was convinced the other's beliefs were heresy. Conflicts in religion knew no boundaries. Civil wars erupted, resulting in conflicts between friends and even between family members.
