During the Hundred Years’ War (1337–1453) Valois dukes of this largest and greatest of all French medieval feudatories moved into the enemy’s camp, allying with England (to which its duke handed over Jeanne d’Arc) and establishing themselves as a rising power.

Burgundian-Swiss War, 1474–1477

Burgundy’s conflict with the Swiss Confederation resulted principally from the effort by Charles the Rash to expand his domain and elevate his Duchy to the rank of kingdom and even one of the Great Powers of Europe.
