In the midst of the Nazis’ industrialized killing system, prisoners disembarking from trains and herded toward the gas chambers often did so with a camp orchestra playing; Sonderkommando and their SS masters played games of soccer in the shadow of crematoria chimneys; inmates performed plays in camp theaters; hospitals were an integral part of even purpose-built death camps.

The Holocaust, the targeted destruction of so many jews and others by the Nazis, continues to live in the memory of the present generations in large part due to the Jewish community itself who has never allowed us to forget. What is also not forgotten and of great relevance especially for scholars, is the reaction of the international community towards the atrocities as they were happening.

The Concentration Camps

Concentration camps were the deadliest killing centers in WW2. They were used to hold and kill both Jews and other prisoners of the Nazis. Over seven million people died in these camps, and that number is still rising every day with the findings of new mass graves.

Elie Wiesel and Oskar Schindler

Although Elie Wiesel and Oskar Schindler came from very diverse backgrounds, both of these men are responsible for not only saving the lives of Jews during WWII but also for chronicling their struggles against the Nazis.
